Alternatives to Net Use
by Guest Smithers- 10 replies

I'm rewriting a small utility app that, amongst other tasks, copies files from the local machine to servers on the local network. The existing implementation executes a batch file that executes the "net use" command to map a drive to each destination server/share. The program then tests via "if (File.Exists())" to ensure that the mappings were successful. I'd like to find a better way to copy the files out to the servers... and eliminate the batch file and "net use" altogether if possible. Is there an easier way to map drive letters than via batch file and net use? Is there a way to copy files without mapping a drive letter at all? I'm developing thi…

Hiya all, I am gonna build a network and this is what its gonna look like(I hope), http://i16.tinypic.com/4rafpn7.jpg PC1 : Windows XP Professional PC2 : Windows 2003 Server PC3 : Windows XP Professional the big question I have now is the following, people here have already told me I should set up forwarders in my Windows 2003 DNS section, or just forget about using them and just stick with the root hints already in there. But my big issue with this is, my PC2 isn't supposed to be online all the time, its actually a fileserver that I occasionaly boot so I can transfer my files to. But the way people here suggested I set it up(like you can see in th…

How to assign drive names
by Guest Millie- 6 replies

Hi I have Windows XP (media centre ed.) and I use four memory sticks plus an external drive. Is there a way that I can assign a name to each device instead of just a drive letter) so that I can recognize it when I plug it in? At the moment I have to open each one and look at the content to see which memory stick or drive it is. Thanks -- Millie

Seires of DVD Problems (Hardware)
by Guest teh XKnight- 2 replies

I am having a lot of problems with my DVD drive. The first problem was that XP MCE simply stopped recognizing that it was even there. The BIOS found it fine and I was able to use and burn DVDs and CDs in Linux (Ubuntu). So, I knew the problem lied with XP. After long searches on the interweb I found that this can occur sometimes after CD/DVD burner software is uninstalled. I hadn't removed any but I had removed several trial DVR programs and one of them used DVD drives to store recoreded TV shows. I used the method on microsoft support to delete Upper and Lower memory from the registry and my DVD drive returned. However my drive is ONLY listed as a DVD…

My Pictures
by Guest Ed Meza- 10 replies

Well, I did it again! I had so many pictures that I opened different folders to identify the places, people, etc. This worked well. However, by mistake *I deleted the My Pictures folder*, which only had a dozen pics. Question is: How do I get the My Pictures folder back where it was? that is: Start|My Documents|My Pictures. I have tried System Restore and have also run the Restoration program. Neither of them worked, since the folder was deleted. Is there a command thru Start|Run to get back the My Pictures Folder (with the camera icon on the envelope)? Or any other way to place that folder back where is supposed to be? Does it really make a difference not to…

Under Xp Pro I kept running into Drive is busy when I tried to use the DVD burner under Acronis TI 10, (attempting to create image of partition). It stumped me, until I tried stopping all Roxio services, under control alt DEL, once all Roxio services were stopped I was able to successfully access my DVD Burner using True image. is anyone aware of a fix to Roxio or TI so that services won't have to be manually stopped to use the Burner?

Folder Settings Folders
by Guest Janetb- 0 replies

When I backed up a large number of folders to a second external hard drive, some of the Folder Settings folders were created as hidden while others were not. In the source, they were all hidden files. Is there a universal setting that can unify them all? It would take way too long to sync the whole drive (especially since both the source and the target are hard drives on USB 1 ports), and I would prefer not to have to change each one separately (they are scattered throughout about 30GB of folders and sub-folders). I don't want to leave them that way because sync and backup programs will then say the source and target folders are different when in effect th…

Desktop Icons with white background
by Guest Justin- 3 replies

Hello, I have read through the discussion and I am unable to find a solution. Hopefully someone here will be able to help me out. I'm using a new laptop with Windows XP. Some of the file icons appear correctly, and some appear incorrectly. The incorrect icons have a white background with the regular icon much smaller and in the middle. The correct application opens when clicked and I haven't experienced any problems because of the different icons, but I would like to fix it. All MS Word icons appear correctly, but Excel and Adobe icons do not. I have tried TweakUI and refreshing the icons and it did not help. I have also tried chainging the co…

Problems With WatchGuard SSL VPN Firewall LDAP Authentication Using Windows Server 2003 Active Directory Log-in Credentials
by Guest NIV Consulting- 0 replies

Problems With WatchGuard SSL VPN Firewall LDAP Authentication Using Windows Server 2003 Active Directory Log-in Credentials I have a WatchGuard SSL VPN firewall, in which the VPN login's were linked using LDAP to the Windows 2000 Active Directory (AD) accounts. With this configuration, the users could login to the VPN using their Windows 2000 AD credentials. When the Windows 2000 Server was upgraded to Windows Server 2003, the AD no longer works with the WatchGuard SSL VPN using LDAP. No configurations to the WatchGuard SSL VPN firewall were changed prior to upgrading to Windows Server 2003. I have heard that this problem may be caused by Windows Server 2003…
