System Restore (HDD Space Config/Behaviour)
by Guest Morgi3- 0 replies

Hi, To reduce the max amount of space system restore uses I reset the reg key at: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore \DiskPercent=3 To 3 as you can see, so my slider for System Restore shows use 3% max of the drive. My drive is 74.5 gb. When I check the size properties of "c:\System Volume Information" is shows as: Size: 6.29gb Size on Disk: 3.36gb Can anyone explain this? Does the "size" show larger as this is uncompressed, but it's really only taking 3.36gb up? Also, 3% of 74.5gb should be more like 2.2gb - can anyone help explain this? Did I adjust the wrong registry key? Thanks.

If a windows XP computer has multiple displays, how can I run a Windows GUI program automatically on a specific display? I dont want to have to manually start the GUI program, and then drag it to the correct display - I just want to specify which program I want to run on each display, either from a command file or from the "Start- >Programs->Startup" folder; or any other automatic method you can think of. Thanks!

taskmgr.exe accessing internet -- seems fishy
by Guest Stewart- 0 replies

Whenever I open the task manager, the Zone Alarm firewall detects taskmgr.exe trying to access the internet. I did a reverse DNS lookup to determine the requested destination. It has been everything from Microsoft, to Esset - the makers of my NOD32 antivirus, and google. Sometimes the IP address is unresolved. Does taskmanager have any reason to access the internet? Some have told me no, and I cannot get an definite answer by searching the internet.

Invalid class string
by Guest Kindrick Ownby- 1 reply

All of a sudden my Canon digital camera software, ZoomBrowser, produces the message "Invalid class string" when I try to run it by double-clicking on the icon. The computer did freeze when accessing some web page recently, but I haven't run the camera software for some time. I re-installed the software that came with the camera, and I get the same result. Should I uninstall/delete all the camera stuff before the re-install? Any suggestions? TIA, Kindrick

by Guest Richard Peterson- 1 reply

Each time I restart my XP machine I get a dialog box that requires me to press OK before the OS continues to the "Blue Splash Page". The box consists only of a "greek" caption, some "greek" dialog text and an OK button. I was able to copy the greek text from inside the box, but not the caption greek text, Here is the text I copied between the quotes "㿸Ü" I have no idea what the dialog box is for or what it does, but I cannot proceed without clicking ok. Does anyone know what it is, or how to get rid of it?

Win2k3 SBS Dial up connection
by Guest chu2ch@gmail.com- 2 replies

Good Day, I have set up a 2k3 SBS and i am wondering, is there a way to set up a dial up connection on the server to only connect to the internet when internet resources are requested from client computers? ie. When a user opens a browser on their PC, the server will then dial up to the internet, and when the user is finished ( or all users are finished) the dial up connection will be dropped. Unfortunately we do have to use dial up connection as our area isn't served with high speed internet as of yet. I thank you for your responses. Sincerely, Chris Nickel

I installed and ran autoruns.exe and ccleaner. My computer runs faster, but now I don't have either my cdrw or dvdrw. I see them in Device Manager with the yellow exlamation point. It says "a driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32) Tried to update driver, uninstalled drives, and ran New Hardware manager, and still nothing. Please help?!?! What do I do now? Thanks.

Windows XP is ignoring my changes to hosts file
by Guest MrNobody- 8 replies

I am having a problem where no matter what I do Windows completely ignores any additions to my hosts file. I tried adding the following entry: 127.0.0.1 something to my hosts file, and then I open up a new command prompt and type "ping something" and after a few seconds delay it says ping request could not find host something. I have tried the following: 1. Made sure the file is just "hosts" with no file extension like .txt or anything. 100% sure about this 2. Opened up regedit and navigated to the Tcpip parameters looking for DatabasePath and made sure it pointed to system32/drivers/etc. 3. I have run ipconfig /flushdns numerous times 4…
