Japanese Keyboard in English XP
by Guest Johnny Muskrat- 0 replies

I was able to get a Japanese 106 keyboard to work in an English version of WinXP. I went to Acer's website and found common support issue with keyboards not working properly. They have a registry patch available for download. The support page is as follows and it is in Japanese: http://www.acer.co.jp/support/faq/desktop/desktop061201001.html Here is a direct link to the file in the event you don't read Japanese: http://www.acer.co.jp/support/faq/desktop/key/kbd_j106.zip You must reboot after installation. Here is the contents of the registry patch: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\i8042prt\Parameters] "LayerDriver JPN"="kbd106…

The perfect HD Usage monitor
by Guest Luca Villa- 4 replies

I consider myself an IT expert but I never found the solution to this... My PC has 4GB of RAM but often it's slow because the HD goes into near- to-100% activity. I would to know what program/process is causing this near-to-100% HD activity but I often don't found the solution. I enabled all the columns related to I/O of the Task Manager but this often didn't help to find the guilty process. Then in Windows Vista I tried to see under Resource Monitor - Disk but this often didn't help too. I found that both the tools are not always able to well represent the Process - HD usage association in the same clear way the Task Manager shows the Process - CPU % usage.…

Can I automatically cache Windows Update on my local network
by Guest najevi- 2 replies

I have recently kicked the tyres on ubuntu linux and am immediately impressed by the ease with which apt-cacher was setup to locally cache the many and varied optional software packages and package updates. This is a huge bandwidth saving on my broadband connection which is also utilized for VOIP telephony. My monopolistic Australian ISP is infamous for metering downloaded data and imposing speed shaping after a certain monthly threshold is reached, so locally caching these packages for reuse on subsequent reinstalls or for reuse by other hosts on the local network is a further benefit. As I type this I am enduring a shaped 'broadband' connection of 64…

I have been working at an SBS 2003 station as an admin and the screen locks after 1 minute of inactivity. There is no setting set in the screen saver to cause this, and I cannot figure out how it is happening. Can anyone give me a clue? Thanks for your help.

Installing new programs - fails to create start menu items.
by Guest BertieBigBollox@gmail.com- 2 replies

Not quite sure how this has happened, but any new software I install seems to fail when creating new entries on the start menu. Seems to be able to create a folder in the start menu such as START- >ALLPROGRAMS->XYZ but then XYZ contains nothing. Some install of programs fails because of this (rolls back) but some seem to work (albeit without start menu entry). I seem to get various messages dependng on the software but one I get is 'warning 1909; could not create xyz.lnk' Any ideas?

File Explorer, Right Click Locks Window
by Guest Mik- 1 reply

Any time I open the Windows XP (SP2, all updates) File Explorer, when I right click to Copy, Paste, Create New Folder, etc. the File Explorer window locks up. I can do a CTL-ALT-DELETE and it shows that the window is "Not Responding". I end the task and the windows desktop rebuilds, and I can open another window. Any ideas? I have anti-virus running (no hits) and tried searching Microsoft support (nothing). Can't find anything anywhere else. Mike

reg fix for desktop icon locations?? Big Q of day!!! LOL!
by Guest rgh1951- 1 reply

OK, I know this seems pretty insignificant, but I have soemone I support who wants their desktop icons to start at the top RIGHT of the screen, rather than top left...like on Macs - I think this is where she comes from. IOW, the "defualt locs" for ALL icons to be just reversed to the other side of the screen. I believe maybe on Win2K Pro or earlier version of windows I knew how to do this, but have long since forgotten. I know you can deselct auto-arrange, and move them over there. But when any new icon is placed on the desktop, it goes back to the top left...she wants it permantly fixed to display icons from the top right of the screen. Can anyonepoin…

Windows XP Pro Won't Load (Intermittent)
by Guest Chris B- 1 reply

I am running Windows Professional XP Version 2002 Service Pack 2 I have a custom PC. Windows XP was recently reinstalled. I now have a problem which occurred before, but, not so much. Bios displays and Windows Starts to load (initial Windows XP with band moving back and forth) then black screen and nothing. This is not all the time but most after long shut down. I then stop PC (hold power button) and then restart with power button. In most cases it starts up as above except for a long black screen with white print: "We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caus…

firewall question
by Guest Steve T- 3 replies

Is there a specific file that ZoneAlarm can block on my PC that won't allow me to connect to the internet, email, control panel, or even open folders in Explorer view? The error message is "Windows cannot access specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the item". I am the Administrator. If I shutdown ZA ver7, everything returns to normal. Even using ERNDT to restore the registry to 2 days previous configuration does not help. Having problems logging into ZA's forum to post the question so I came here for now. I can re-install ZA if need be. Thanks, Steve T.

compatibility mode issue
by Guest marco Starglider- 2 replies

hi, a while ago i had a good project in visual studio 2005 (vc++), with a good build and a good .exe file. it used some basic openAL functionality, with muliple buffers and sources. the sounds played perfectly at the right moments. i wanted to check the compatibilty and set the comp. mode (in .exe file prop's) to '95 and medium res. or something. since then i have an openAL problem with my project, in that sometimes a source won't play. i have set the comp. mode back to normal immediately after, but i have kept the .exe file from the build in my solution folder, with a different name, for back-checking possibilities. i don't exactly know, what the co…

by Guest Bob L.- 8 replies

The Task Manager does not show any toolbar buttons on the top of the window or status bar at the bottom. There are no buttons for Applications, Processes, Performance, Networking or Users. It is just a blank window with applications that are running. There is no (X) to close the window. What could be causing this problem and how could I make the repair. Thanks, Bob
