Can W2K Be Installed on SATA Drives?
by Guest W. Watson- 16 replies

That's the question in the Subject. It seems to be balking at the idea. I have a 320G Western Digital. It seems to see something less than 320G, and tells me it wants to establish a C: drive, NTFS, of about 320M, and a D: drive of about 50M. I told it to continue, and it told me some format was incompatible with W2K. I just stopped. -- Wayne Watson (Nevada City, CA) Web Page: <speckledwithStars.net>

Hi, I have WindowsXP MCE, all latest updates from Microsoft. Yesterday I connected to my computer using RDP from work, when I got back I found that my Media Center has a black screen, nevertheless the MC application itself is visible when I launch it using a green button on remote. In case of all other application I can see only black screen and lonely mouse cursor. During computer restart the screen become blank momentary after Windows boot screen, that mean I cannot see login dialog box. The remote access application are working without any problem, I still can access the computer by RDP or VNC. Any ideas? Thank you in advance, Leonid

STOP error while starting GameGuard
by Guest Bubbles- 2 replies

(I hope it doesn't bother if I post this here again, because I think in Games it won't be noticed) STOP: 0x0000001E (0xC0000005, <insert many numbers here>, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED <insert many more numbers here> NTOSKRNL.EXE This is the bluescreen I get if I try starting the GameGuard to play a game. I can execute the game just fine when I start it without the GameGuard but can't exactly play because the GameGuard is off. (This is a anti-cheat-programm so I need it anyway). Can someone suggest the solution of the problem I have? My PC: CPU : AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3200+ OS : Microsoft Windows 2000 Worksta…

Laptop that has keyboard/mouse problem.

This has me well and truly stumped. I have a friends Laptop he has asked me to fix for him. Sony Vaio PCG-FX705 running XP home fully updated. The symptoms are as follows: After boot, the machine seems to be working normally until the mouse is used to select any function from the start menu. If I click 'start' and hover on 'all programs', the 'all programs' list will appear very briefly and then disappear. Every time, rendering the all programs menu useless. The mouse then exhibits eratic behaviour. If I try to click on Icons, it is as though the mouse buttons have been assigned functions other than their proper purpose.. For example, if i doub…

Shutdown Button Missing But Not in Safe Mode
by Guest THE COMPUTER LAB- 1 reply

XP Home machine runs miserably slow. When you try to restart, you will notice the ShutDown button missing. So I reset the PC and Safe Mode runs very fast with the shutdown button appearing okay. Cannot find any discussion so far on this. Don't quote those MS KB articles about using GPEDIT.MSC because it is not used in XP Home. Also, does not matter what value you use in 'shutdownwithoutlogon' registry key. TIA

Svr2003 TS vs XP RDP..
by Guest LVDave- 2 replies

I have a service-like java app that I used to run on an XP system, but to consolidate machines, I've moved the java app to a Win2K3 server. The app tends to die quite a bit, so I need to be able to access it via TS/RDP thru a vpn OR from the server console to be able to restart it. Under XP, the app ran under an unpriv user account, and if I RDP'ed into the XP system as that user, I saw (or didnt see) the app on the taskbar, and could take action to restart it if necessary. Under Win2K3/TS, this has become a chore.. Assuming I started the app on the console, logged in as the unpriv user, if I logged in via RDP via the same unpriv user, it was obvious I was…

Windows XP Auto-connect
by Guest Fraun- 3 replies

Hi, my computer used to use a Connect To dialup connection to the internet, but now it uses broadband wireless, and everything works fine except for the last couple weeks, two different kinds of auto-connect boxes have been popping up to initiate a dial-up. This seems to happen constantly every 18 seconds, but sometimes very frequently and it impedes usability. Sometimes, it doesn't happen for quite a while, for example, it hasn't happened during the last hour, but I won't say the problem just fixed itself. I've been searching for answers on the internet, but my searches are too general, and really, I'm wondering if this box is infected with a virus. The …

DX10 and WinXP
by Guest titus12- 20 replies

Will Microsoft make DX10 to work with XP? I read that DX10 will only work with Vista. Like about 82% of computer users who prefer XP and are not planning to upgrade to Vista, I want to be able to use the newer video cards(PCI-Express 2.0) with XP. What do you think about Microsoft changing some things in Vista to be more like XP if they come out with a VistaSP1? Thank you; David

XP reinstalls drivers for USB devices each time it sees them
by Guest sigmundsplatz@gmail.com- 1 reply

I have a lab of 30 computers running Windows XP and all of them will prompt you to reinstall drivers for any USB device when you plug it it. This happens with USB key drives, keyboards, mice as well as other more obscure USB devices. If I plug something in, it detects it, asks me to install drivers, I have to click through the prompts - eventually sees it....if I remove it and plug it right back in it goes through the same thing again instead of automatically seeing it. Its happenening on all 30 of these (Dell Optiplex GX620) machines and its driving me crazy. anyone have any suggestions?

non-existent floppy drive
by Guest Tinieblas- 6 replies

My computer says that it has a floppy drive installed, but there is not one there. When my computer turns on it gives an error message because it's looking for the non-existent floppy drive. Under "My Computer" I have a 3 1/2 floppy drive listed. But like I said, my computer does not have a floppy drive. I've tried uninstalling it, but when I restart it says it found new hardware and automatically reinstalls everything. What do I need to do to convince my computer that there is not, nor ever has there been a floppy drive installed? I am running Windows XP Home Version 5.1 on a Dell Dimension E521. Thank you for your help...
