Clock / XP OS
by Guest Apan- 5 replies

The computer clock suddenly decided to go slow. I took my computer to lacal Best Buy to check for sound card. I unplugged the machine and took it to the store and I was told at the store that my hard drive was not working. The machine had no problem prior to unplugging the machine. This machine is locally built. I took the machine back to the person who built it and he found out the C-drive was disabled. After correcting that I came back home and then I found the date and time is at May 2005. I had reset the closck using time.windows.com. Still the clock is going slow. Now I can not connect to time.windows or nist for update. The motherboard is about yea…

LG Optical Drive & Windows XP Home SP2
by Guest Tevibear- 7 replies

I have an LG Super Milti RW optical drive that is supposed to read and write both CDs and DVD data. However when I installed the drive into my XP box, I could only get it to read and write CDs and not DVDs. I located the automatic firmware update software (no easy task) and installed it. After the updates were complete, it still would not recognize or burn DVDs. :( Has anyone else had this kind of trouble? If so, what was your solution? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Here are some facts about the hardware and my systyem that might be of help. LG Drive Specifications from Device Manager: HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GSA-H54N (assuming GSA-H54N is the model)…

After Dark Screensaver
by Guest Benzmum- 8 replies

This may not mean anything to those who are younger than middle-aged, but I'd like some advice about one of the screensavers that Berkeley's After Dark produced. I had a Mac in those days (don't now) and I could sit for ages mesmerized by Nirvana, which generated a vast range of psychedelic patterns on my computer screen. It's no longer available, even for the Mac, but I'd love to get hold of the equivalent for XP. Is anyone familiar with this Nirvana screensaver? If not, can someone suggest perhaps another (reputable) forum where I might have more luck? Thanks for any help you can provide.

F-Secure cripples computer
by Guest phantom- 16 replies

One of the computers in my household has been crippled by a failed uninstallation of F-Secure, bundled in a package from my ISP they call Cogeco Security Services. Or something like that. What happenned was the computer suddenly reset, as if somebody pressed the reset button that doesn't exist. That was in the middle of uninstalling Cogeco Security Services. The result, is that the computer cannot connect to the internet any more. We can't figure out how to fix this; the computer has to be able to access the internet in order to reinstall the software, but it can't do that, so we can't reinstall it to uninstall it again. We have tried running the uninstaller "bw…

Silent Restore Points?
by Guest LMO- 16 replies
Aloha all. Is there a way to automatically have my system create Restore point without them showing up on the screen? I use a small Create Restore Point program, which I have placed in my Startup file. Whenever I reboot a point is created, but it also shows up on the screen and delays access. Is there a way to schedule Restore Point creation (say first bootup of the day) that would be silent? Thank you.

External Hard Drive Connection Problem
by Guest parkchung@gmail.com- 1 reply

We just installed a 100 Gig HD into a Dell Latitude 100L that previously had a 40 Gig drive. We stuck the old drive into an enclosure, planning to get iTunes and other assorted files off of the drive after reinstalling the OS etc. The process went smoothly except when we tried to get the files we needed off of the old hard drive. When we plug it in via USB it immediately goes to a blue screen with a message saying that a "problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down." It also says that "Plug and Play detected an error most likely caused by a faulty driver." We've installed SP2 as well as the driver the enclosure came with to no avail. Any help you…

svchost 100% cpu and network connections service
by Guest charts- 1 reply

I had what appears to be a common problem with svchost taking 100%cpu. I was convinced it was the problem listed in KB 927891. I applied those updates but no luck. It still showed 100% CPU like the article said it might. However, turning off automatic updates didn't stop the CPU problem. Which led me to think that it might not be update related after all. So I used "sc config wuauserv type= own" to start the updates in their own svchost and it that confirmed it. Procexp showed that the updates svchost was happy but the other was still taking 100% cpu. So by a process of elimination I got it down to the "Network connections" service which is set t…

Troubleshooting in Safe Mode
by Guest Jiimy Jay- 3 replies

I'm running XP Pro and each time I launch Rossetta Stone I get the message Macromedia Projector has encountered a problem and needs to close. After following all the suggestions from their tech support I still have the problem. I even encounter this error when I boot in safe mode. The interesting thing is that I have 2 copies of XP loaded on my computer. The other version I boot up to when I want to play video games. This version of XP does not have stuff such as Virus protection, startup progams, etc. Its just barebones to give me the most amount of memory free to play games. I installed Rosetta Stone on this version of XP and it boots up fine, even in …

Win XP SR2 requires System Disk to boot
by Guest Ch33zst34k- 18 replies

Guys - I need some help on this one... I just purchased a new custom-built gaming rig that was shipped with Vista. After experiencing all the headaches and non-working apps, I decided to wipe Vista and install XP. To do it properly I had to eradicate all traces of Vista using Killdisk. I installed XP SR2 and all drivers on the virgin system, however it will not boot without my XP System disk in the dvd drive. If I attempt to boot without the disk, it initiates the bios screen which is followed an all black screen with a single flashing cursor... and sits there until I reboot with the CD in. With the CD in, it asks to boot from cd, which I do not and then…

Raid 5 repair in Windows Server 2003
by Guest nobodycares123@gmail.com- 1 reply

I hope I could find some help here. Thank you in advance. It's about a Raid-5 in Windows Server 2003 (fully updated) environment, software Raid on four SATA drives. One of the four drives in my Raid-5 array was not working and needed replacement. All four drives are identical Seagate 500Gb drives. In the Disk Management Console, Disk 4 was listed as "Missing" and the rest of the array is in "Failed Redundancy". Per Microsoft TechNet's instructions, I tried to "reactivate" multiple times and the drive was confirmed dead. So, yesterday I found the Serial number of the missing drive under Device Manager (by elimination, that is), and took out the old drive. …
