Delayred Response after Closing IE
by Guest DavidB- 3 replies

When I close my last Internet Explorer window and click on another program icon (or the Start Menu), the hour glass sits there for almost a minute and one-half (80 seconds) before the requested program starts. I am running a Pentium 233 MHz with 128 Meg of Ram. Is there a setting in Internet Options or elsewhere that I can use to try to fix this delay?

COMPLETE backup of harddrive contents 1 2
by Guest mike_302- 32 replies

Hi, I am trying to do the right hting by completely backing up my harddrive to a removable hard drive. What I am aiming for is a complete and total back of the files that I currently have on the computer so that if my laptop hard drive finally took a crap on me, I could simply get a new hard drive for it, install XP on it again, and drag and drop the files onto the hard drive... I don;t know if what I said made much sense, but I think some of you understand. See, waht I've done to my computer is tweaked the he|| out of it to make it go REALLY fast, and I've got quite a few prgrams on it that I would prefer NOT to have to reinstall because I would be here …

Win XP, IE7 I get an unwanted automatic internet logon every time I start my PC. Using TCPIP view, I have ascertained that it could be caused by something called "System:4" The TCPIP view lists the process as follows:- System:4 TCP SN048816020001:microsoft-ds SN048816020001:0 LISTENING If I try to use process properties it won't allow. What is it, do I need it, and how can I stop it from automatically connecting to the internet? donwb

Items not remaining valid in Favorites list
by Guest badatti2d- 1 reply

I use XP Home, SP2, and run IE7. For some reason, when I go to a site that I want to save in my Favorites list (http://www.google.com, or http://www.worldstart.com, for example), I do the pulldown from Favorites in the toolbar, and select 'Save To Favorites'. This seems to work, and I can return to my Favorites list in my Start menu and click on the site and return there....the problem is, it seems that after using some of these url's a couple of times, when I click on them i get a message that says, " The target "" of this Internet Shortcut is not valid. Go to the Internet Shortcut property sheet and make sure the target is correct. " I don't know why …

Blue screen warning
by Guest Terry- 1 reply

I just got a message that XP was shutting down. When everything started back up everything seemed fine. About 15 min after the reboot I got a "system change detected" message from F-Secure. Everything still seems fine. Does XP store the information it displayed on the blue screen? How to I find it? Thanks BTW I have not installed anything on my computer in quite a while. I mainly surf the Internet and watch avi movies I have collected.

Is there are way to lock the desktop with a password like in professional version if you need to leave the computer for a minute but don't want to shut down all of your applicaitons and log off? I find this very annoying that I cannot use a shortcut to a password protected screen saver like I used to in older version of windows. My son likes to push the buttons and stuff when I'm away from the terminal. :( Thx Tevi

upgrading from xp home to xp pro
by Guest clueless O- 2 replies

we need to upgrade the 2 computers at our little office from xp home to xp pro. We bought the xp pro Upgrade at the store. (1) Does it only work on 1 computer? Do I need to get one for each of the 2 computers? (2) I read somewhere that we'll need the actual original xp home disc from each computer during the upgrade, is that true? (xp home was preinstalled on the computers and I don't know if we actually have the discs - we have the licenses). Thanks in advance for all youre help Owen

Lost "Sent" email
by Guest Concerned in Illinois- 5 replies

I suddenly "lost" the history of sent email, going back to Dec 2006. When I went to the problem log of my computer, I saw the following message: Catalog Database (1056) The version store for this instance (0) has reached its maximum size of 16Mb. It is likely that a long-running transaction is preventing cleanup of the version store and causing it to build up in size. Updates will be rejected until the long-running transaction has been completely committed or rolled back. Possible long-running transaction: SessionId: 0x02CF03C0 Session-context : 0x00000000 Session-context ThreadId: 0x00000638 What do I do to correct this problem so that I can see al…

dual-booting Windows with Linux on separate drives?
by Guest ocicat- 6 replies

Searching reveals that boot.ini can be configured to boot different versions of Windows on separate drives: [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1) \WINDOWS="Windows 2000" /fastdetect Is it possible to have Windows XP on one drive & Linux on another? I understand the need for copying the Partition Boot Record of whatever other OS I multiboot (I've done this with XP & the *BSD's on a single drive...), but so far I have unsuccessfully been able to accomplish multibooting on multiple dr…

Always ask for login information AND RDP client 6.0
by Guest George Valkov- 2 replies

I have configured my server to always ask for login information. The server is 2003 EE SP2. ( [Administrative tools --> Terminal services configuration --> Connections --> RDP-Tcp --> Logon Settings] Always use the following logon information: user name:{blank} domain:{blank} [x] Always prompt for password ) 1. How do I tell the Remote desktop connection client v6.0.6000 not to ask me for user name and password? (it will be ignored anyway) 2. I don't understand what is the use of that dialog, when the server offers a standard logon screen, so is there at least one advantage in using it? Thank You for any advices and answers! Geo…
