Hello, I've just installed Xp pro on a PC that ran Home edition. Loaded new motherboard drivers etc but just can't play DVDs. IDE channel is set to DMA. Got a Radeon 7000 graphics card but running ATI's latest driver. Haven't tried the original ones yet! The drives reads data, everything Just NO DVD play back, hangs or crashes the system. I've tried different drives, the original cable is the normal 40 pin type, tried an 80 pin type no luck, baffled. Any help appreciated!

XP Screensave password
by Guest Mike H- 3 replies

Apologies for this re-post but I didn't get an answer that solved the problem of being asked for a password after my screensaver has kicked in. To recap:- The screensaver i'm using "My Picture Slideshow" doesn't require a password. Screensaver setup "on resume password protect" is not checked. The "Prompt for password when computer resumes fron standby" on the advanced tab of power management is not checked. Despite this I am still being made to enter a password. Any further thoughts? Her's the link to the previous thread. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/newsgroups/reader.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsxp.general&mid=f1a7756a-a30d-…

Not simply disabled in Menu Items, also unsuccessful with ... "Open the folder c:\windows\inf and right-click the PCHealth.inf file, nthen choose "Install". If you have a Service Pack installed, select c:\windows\i386\ServicePackFiles\PCHealth.inf instead." ... the whole thing has disappeared. How to re-instate the facility, is there some other way?

Kernel32.dll error
by Guest sharontango- 20 replies

In my other ME machine, when I try to download an attachement, I get this error message {Iexplore has caused an error in the Kernel32.dll. Iexplore will now closed} Although there are many articles/solutions to the kernel32.dll, none seems to describe my situation. I try to follow the suggestion from { http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?kernel32} but it seems I cannot install or replace/rename the kernel32.dll file as the old one being in use. How can I rectify this error then, thanks

ftp connection disallowed while firewall on
by Guest Nathan- 2 replies

My first symptom was when I was trying to download teamspeak. it pointed me to an ftp site for the download but when I clicked on it, it did nothing or gave me 'page not found' message. The second symptom: I try to use the command prompt function 'ftp' to a ftp server I know works and It says that it connected but it immediately says "connection closed by remote host." Also, when I try to use Core FTP LE to connect to my webserver's ftp site it couldn't even connect at all. However, I did narrow it down a bit. I turned off my firewall from the security center and everything worked perfectly fine. Any insights would be appreciated. Thank Nathan…

ftp access denied and administrator access to local policy denied
by Guest Internet Explorer User Gets Runtime Erro- 0 replies

Documentation suggests the importance of enabling local log on user rights for iusr_computername (the anonymous account taken on by any visitor to a public FTP site) and indeed when I try to enter the site via browser from another box access is denied even though the welcome message I put in there appears. I want to check local security policy but it's locked, even when I enter that administrative mmc console as an administrator. (Note this is just win2k pro) Suggestions please? Thanks in advance for your help.

Mass renaming
by Guest Kieron Capehorn- 9 replies

Is there a method of renaming all the files in a folder systematically? I have a folder full of files that begin with numbers. I want to add a 0 to the beginning of each filename (i.e. 1.xls will become 01.xls). I have tried putting the command 'rename *.* 0*.*' into command, but that replaced the first letter of each filename with a 0, rather than adding a 0. This there an easy way to do this? Thanks.

Running process woes in Windows Task Manager
by Guest Jackson- 9 replies

A process named Agent.exe is active in Task Manager to a ridiculous degree. The name pops up as a running process and during several seconds appears to make scores of read/write calls to the registry. Then it disappears for several more seconds until it comes back up and repeats the process (over and over and over...). I tracked the program to: C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdatServices\. I renamed it to ZZZagent.exe and rebooted. The machine goes thru a frenzy of trying to find Agent.exe which I renamed. It tells me to insert the ScanSoft Omni Page SE 4.0 disk and etc. Finally I keep cancelling the requests and it tells me that the Wind…

But i need to get some files off the old hard drive, not many just one program and some backups. at the moment when i boot up the old hard drive it only goes to the xp start screen and goes black. i've tried the system recovery disk and have got as far as the command prompt for which windows and admin password, what are my options to enter here? is there a default admin password as it was not me who set up the computer? any help would be great. -- thanks, sean

Hi. I'm sure this is a dumb question, but I could use some help. I'm trying to transfer files from a nine year old laptop that has serial and parallel ports but no Ethernet or USB ports, to a more recent computer that has parallel and USB ports but no serial port. What kind of cable do I need using which ports on each computer in order to use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard? -- Thanks, YN
