Windows Media Player and mpg (mpeg) movie files
by Guest Snapper- 10 replies

I cannot get Windows Media Player to play mpg files that were created with a Sony digital camera (still camera with movie recording). Apple Quicktime and Nero Showtime play them fine. However, when WMP11 plays them there is no video and the sound is clipped and staticy. I am assuming that it may be a codec problem. If so, where can I find the appropriate codec? I search the ms site but I got hopelessly lost trying to work it all out. The main aim was to play them over the network on the TV using the Xbox 360. I've ended up having to use "Super" a video converter to conver them to divx AVI files. That works fine but it'd be nice if we didn't have to convert th…

"New Folder" warning puzzler
by Guest Spiral- 2 replies

When I make a new folder, either on the desktop or in an app's Save window, I get this warning: "Renaming, moving or deleting 'New Folder' could make some programs not work. Are you sure you want to do this?" Yes or No I can highlight a folder and "Rename" with no trouble--I think it's the "new" thing that bothers the system. Just running one virus app--nothing, and I mean nothing else. Anyone with insight on this one?

Converting 64 bit to 32 bit
by Guest Rick- 7 replies

I recently bought and installed the OEM versioin of Vista 64 bit, but discovered that I really should have purchased the 32 bit. is there any way to disable the 64 bit and convert it to 32 bit, either through the program itself, or by contacting Microsoft and have them do something, such as sending a patch or some other software reprogramming that they might be able to do if I send them my licensing information, etc. Rick

Replacing motherboard on Gateway laptop
by Guest romac- 7 replies

I have a Gateway laptop that lost all power and after thorough troubleshooting I determined that the motherboard is the problem (no voltage to the fans, etc.). I want to order a replacement MB but the last time that I replaced a MB (on my old desktop) there was a conflict with the new MB and and hard drive so I eventually had to reinstall Windows XP. I'm repairing this laptop for a friend and she is hoping to keep everything on her hard drive but I'm afraid that I will run into the same problem as before where I might have to do an Windows reinstall. Any insight and knowledge would be greatly appreciated

File Sharing; Access Denied (REPOST)
by Guest Zakhary- 15 replies

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Two computers (Computer1 and Computer2) share a workgroup that other computers on the same subnet have access to. Computer1 and Computer2 initially shared a folder on Computer1, “My Document.” That shared folder was the target for “My Documents” on both computers. I attempted to eliminate “simple sharing” so that only I would have access. But because there isn’t a common domain, this couldn’t occur. I also tried to make the shared folder hidden by adding a dollar symbol ($), but then couldn’t use it as a target for “My Documents.” Upon returning everything back to how I originally had it, several files became inaccessible on BOTH …

Curious Problem, Terminal server hangs at random, and then takes d
by Guest Mordekai- 2 replies

Hi All, I run a domain with 3 DC's, 2 TS servers, 2 Exchange servers and a host of DB servers. One site in particular has a reoccurring issue with the Terminal services Server. All will run fine for some time, sometimes a day sometimes a week, then all of a sudden I will get a call from one of the terminal services users mentioning that one program or another that they are using is stalled with an hourglass... I then reattach my own TS session to check the problem (which opens fine so long as I was already logged in), however as soon as I try to open a new application it hangs on load. Not even task manager will display. At this point the only option…

Regedit HKEY_USERS
by Guest Russ- 0 replies

After reading many MS KB's on the subject of security I am lost when it comes to editing "ESCDomains" in Regedit. I can delete unwanted "domains" one at a time, but there are too many (perhaps thousands). Is there a way to hold down Shift to highlight more than one at a time, or is there a better way to delete in bulk? Many thanks! -- Rusty

Numerous problems installing XP
by Guest Mike B- 2 replies

Sorry, this is a bit long winded. About 3 weeks ago I sent my laptop out for repair for a overheating problem. I was getting blue screen errors, internet explorer has encountered a problem and must shut down, bad pool header, system dump etc. My extended warranty does not cover software issues. When I got it back I was told that there was a corrupt file in the operating system. I reinstalled windows XP and the device drivers. everything worked fine for about 30 to 40 minutes then the same errors returned. I ran anti-virus, spyware and went into start, run cmd sfc/scannow No errors were found. It kept getting blue screen errors and the same issues. …

HTTP 401.1 Message on My XP Machine
by Guest Charles Allen- 1 reply

When I try to access any local internet site on my machine, I'm prompted with a login box. However, I don't know what login it's looking for. It shouldn't ask for one, anyway, and I need to know why I'm being prompted. Beyond that, I've tried logging in as myself (member of administrators group) but that doesn't work either. I'm getting the following message: HTTP 401.1 - Unauthorized: Logon Failed Internet Information Services Any help would be greatly appreciated. -- Charles Allen

Question on Robocopy
by Guest Will- 1 reply

We want to use the robocopy utility to copy large multi-gigabyte backup files from a local hard drive to a central file server. My question is what would happen if robocopy started to copy over a large file that was being actively written to by the native Windows backup application? Will robocopy simply refuse to copy any of the file at all? Will it copy up to the last byte being written and then hang? In general would it be a safe practice to use robocopy on a backup file that is being actively created? -- Will

DISKPART : Change volume number ...
by Guest guillaume.braux@gmail.com- 1 reply

Hello, I have made a WIM image (with ImageX) of a source master (win XP) I would like to deploy on several other computers. The source system contains several partitions (with a dual XP boot) and a dvd rom drive. I use diskpart to create and format partitions on target systems before applying the Wim images for each partitions. My problem : When I do a "DISKPART > list volume" on the source computer, volume # 0,1 and 2 are my system partitions, and volume #3 is the DVD-Rom drive. The problem is that I can't have this volume order when creating and formating the partitions on the target computers ! The DVD-Rom is always shown as volume 0 (and is not remo…

Loud sound during boot
by Guest John Eppley- 5 replies

I've tolerated this problem for a long time. It started immediately after one of the many MS updates. I had hoped another update would fix the problem. The problem is an enormously loud split-second sound that occurs during the MS national anthem at startup. The first half dozen bars are comfortably played, then at least two bars are deafening. The sound then returns to normal. Any ideas.
