Hello, My backup software has a bare metal restore capability. It grabs services database and system state. Is the C:\windows\installer folder needed for anything important? Thanks!

Cannot connect to Windows XP Client remote desktop
by Guest Marcus- 6 replies

Dear Newsgroup I cannot establish a remote desktop connection on my Windows XP Pro base unit (10.0.1.241) from my Windows XP laptop (10.0.1.242). Connection is an internal one only on 10.0.1.x subnet via router. Windows Firewall has been switched off, checked that port 3389 is listening with netstat -a, RD is swithced on, check that relevant services are running, even moved the RDP port from 3389 to 4489. Ran wireshark to monitor network activity and have noticed lots of TCP checksum error, first 4 packets are good, then errors as below Source Destination Proto Info 10.0.1.242 10.0.1.241 TCP warmspotMgmt > 4…

by Guest Neil- 1 reply

Hi: I am running XP on an XP DeskStation P4 which auto updated tonight. When turned on the xp login password was initially not recognized with several restarts required. On first succesful restart it appears that the system is running on an old IBM preload NTFS partition and not on the old second preload partition. Restore point to last pre-auto update did nothing. How do I restore to the second partition? Neil

Moving the OS to another partition.

I wish to move the XP Home OS from one partition on disk 0 to the primary partition on disk 1. Is there a simple way of doing this or does one have to re-install again from scratch, please? By way of explanation, the computer in question is an old one with a small 12GB HD and was supplied with Win 98 installed on C drive. Four years ago I bought a retail XP disk and attempted to do a clean install. For some reason it would not install on C drive over the original OS but installed itself on a logical partition D resulting in a dual boot system. Now D partition is nearly full and there is little room for movement. There is a second 80GB HD installed - conne…

I am trying to lock down specific users (laptops) on TS 2003. 1. I am using GPM to do this, here is the setup: 2. Created an OU called School Laptops 3. Created and linked two GPO's withing the OU called LaptopLoopback and LaptopSecurity 4. In LaptopLoopback set up Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/System/Group Policy: enabled loopback processing mode. 5. In LaptopSecurity enabled User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Control Panel: disabled access to control panel. 6. Added a test user called Buster to Security Filtering for LaptopSecurity. 7. Logged onto Terminal Server as Buster, but I could access the Control Panel. 8. Added Authen…

CAble Modem/Speed
by Guest Dan R- 7 replies

I recently upgaded my service to a 20 Mbps cable speed through my provider. Realizing my old modem was only DOCSIS 1.0 compatible, I went out and got a new Motorola SB5101 modem than can handle DOCSIS 2.0 and upstream speeds of 30 Mbps. I can only seem to get a maximum speed of 7.2 Mbps. The cable company says an acceptable level should be around 12 Mbps, and after calls to their tech support line they cannot seem to figure out why I can't connect at a minimum 12 Mbps. They said the connection is excellent with no packet loss. I do have a router, but when I hook the cable modem directly to the computer it gives me the same max speed of 7.2 Mbps. I also tu…

Which flash player for Firefox 2?
by Guest lb- 20 replies

I have been experimenting with Firefox 2 and downloaded the latest flash player which was 9.0.124 or something like that. No complaints from the installer, but the outcome was pretty ugly. Corrupted video and bringing the browser to a crawl, I barely got it closed before it locked up my system. Going to the system requirements page, firefox 2 was not listed for windows 98 for this version of flash player. Anyone know which player will work with 98 and FF 2? Thanks

Turning off auto-installation of updates when shutting down comput
by Guest Moxieman- 6 replies

Two Questions; Background: I like to manually search for, select, and install updates. Somehow, XP Home Edition -- SP3, has decided that it will automatically download updates and then tells me it will automatically install them unless I use a particular shut-down link when I shut down. I turned off the automatic download feature in Security Center. Q1. Where does XP Home Ed. store downloaded updates so I can eliminate these extra updates I don't want? Q2. How can I get rid of this shut-down screen that wants to install updates on shut-down unless I click on a particular shut-down link? I don't mind having the option, but I do mind not being able…

I've been looking at Personal Accountz - but it doesn't say if it works with 64 bit Thanks

This is a recent development. When I clicked on a folder in the right hand Explorer window In the past, Explorer opened the folder and displayed all the folders and file in it in the right hand window. John Wirt

My Win'XP instatalation disk no longer works. I get to the end of the disk and no changes have been made to the installation. The important thing I have noticed: 1. The term 'Deleting Folder ??" now takes place for about 10 minutes. This is new. This is followed by a few minutes of "Creating File", which is usual. Please help!
