My mate has been given a PC which has a foreign language installed..looks like french...plus he doesn't know the password to login...It came with the XP install CD (in french !). and licence key ..So on trying to do an new install all the initial boot screen stuff is in french as well. Would it be true to say that its ok to boot this PC off his existing PC's XP Home installation CD (an english version) to do a clean install but actually put in the licence key for the french version ?...you get my drift ? Thanks in advance

Windows XP Computer won't boot
by Guest 920jeff- 1 reply

I'm still having problems with this computer. It is running Windows XP Home Edition. Originally, I got an error message saying, "NTLDR: > Fatal error 256 reading boot.ini. I put the Windows XP CD in the CD-ROM drive, and booted it from that. Then I did a repair installation that I thought would fix the problem, leaving all the data and apps intact. After finishing this repair install, the computer still won't boot. There is not error message this time; it just cycles the boot sequence over and over without loading windows. Any suggestions on what the next step might be? Thanks for the previous responses from last week and for any new help …

Cannot see all already mapped network drives in My Computer
by Guest Bobson- 0 replies

Hi, I just experience some little trouble with XP and mapped network drives. One of the clients is running SP2 and mapped with 2003 server folders by Logon scripts. They both are domained. The user tried to access several mapped drives, but she could nto see any in my computer. Try to access them by typing the drive letters in "Start" "Run" but result is the same. When I tried to "disconnect" them, it is so wierd that you could see all the "connected" and "mapped" drive there. ALso, there are two ways to access to the network drives, the first is to open up any applications and go to use the Open. You will see all them there. The second way is to d…

\$Extend\$UsnJrnl [Excess Allocation]
by Guest Pseu- 3 replies

Hello, Software: Windows XP Media Center Edition [sP 3]. When I look at the Diskeeper Pro Premier 2008 job report for my “C” drive [it never appears in the “D” drive report] it shows a defragmented file called \$Extend\$UsnJrnl [Excess Allocation]; this file increases in size on a daily basis. I found a so-called fix, which was to type in the run command box "fsutil usn deletejournal /D C:" without quotation marks, and then reboot. However, \$Extend\$UsnJrnl [Excess Allocation] begins to grow again immediately! If I understand correctly, this problem may have something to do with the indexing service, even though I have never enabled it. Any help…

Windows firewall settings
by Guest kapibarra- 1 reply

Hi all. I have an issue wherein I will configure the firewall on an XP SP2 machine, and it seemingly will randomly lose it's settings. Not sure why they get reset to default, but we do not use group policy/local policy on these machines so if it's not that, I don't know what else it could be. What I really want to know is is there some way for me to save or export the windows firewall settings so that when they mysteriously vanish, I can put them back quickly again. Could I possibly export a registry setting maybe? Thanks! -- kapibarra

Print Spooler error
by Guest jcpierce- 4 replies

I am running Windows Server 2003 SP1. Once a week, the print spool stops working. If I restart it, the remote users get locked out of the system and they cannot log back in. My only option is to reboot the server. When I reboot the server service hungs on starting. I have tried all the options I could find in google (modifying the registry) and that still did not work. I usually have to stop and start the print spooler and the server server and reboot 2 -3 times before the server comes back online so users can log in. What else can I do? Has anyone else experienced this type of problem?

Media Center 2005 will not boot.
by Guest Dalwell- 7 replies

I have an HP Pavilion, a1640n, system running Media Center 2005 with SP 3 installed from the Microsoft Update site. When I try to boot, I get the option screen for Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, etc screen. No matter what option I choose the system powers down, gives me the HP logo screen and returns to this option screen. It will let me enter the boot menu, setup and system recovery console, but will not boot. I have run fixboot, fixmbr, chkdsk /r but still get the same result. I decided the frustration level was approaching redline and used the original XP install disc to reformat the drive and put a clean install on. The disc will run through th…

Windows XP Pro - Lots-o-Apps CRASHING...
by Guest chigrboy- 0 replies

But wait there's more! I'm seeing this as an office-wide epidemic! All clients running windows XP pro sp2 (25 clients). The basic complient is that Outlook freezes, crashes and burns then must be restarted in Outlook safe mode (outllook 2003 and 2007). It's random. I've updated one machine to SP3 in hopes that this might fix the problem but no go. It started off with just a few people (i know it's starting to sound like a virus but I've scanned and scanned and none found, well except for one dork)... When I look through the event viewer logs though, I see more apps that are hanging besides Outlook. This behaviour is the same for all the users that ha…

Corrupt domain profiles...

Environment: 5 servers, 1 2003 SBS, 3 2003 and 1 2000 all fully patched. About 50 workstations all running XP sp2 WSUS and Symantec Antivirus At first I just thought this issue was your standard run of the mill corrupt profile. But this issue seems to be spreading (5 users in the past few months, multiple times on each computer now) and I cant figure out what is causing it. Rebooting usually fixes the issue but there have been a few times where I’ve had to completely recreate the profile. All are local profiles..no roaming, no folder redirection. I've also tried installing the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service In the event log this shows up.. Windows wa…

Problem with Remote Desktop Options
by Guest kelmel- 5 replies

We are using Remote Desktop for our administrators to connect to a new server. We want to go ahead and set up the options and credentials but some workstations have this ability and other workstations don't. Why? When I open up my own Remote Desktop (V 6.0), I am able to put the remote address in, but when I click Options, it tells me that it will ask me for my credentials when I connect. We want these settings automatic for our users. Our users are running Windows XP SP2 and SP3. Would the service pack make a difference? Thanks for the help!
