x64 Vista SP1 and Win2008 corrupts large NTFS disk volumes
by Guest UncleVic- 20 replies

ISSUE AFFECTS ONLY x64 EDITIONS OF WINDOWS VISTA SP1 OR WINDOWS SERVER 2008. On my multi-boot development server, I'm seeing corruption of my NTFS file system when using or installing upon large partitions using x64 Vista SP1 (or x64 Windows Server 2008 SP1, same behavior). Repair (CHKDSK) of the volumes does not work, unless I boot to an x86 edition O/S like Windows Server 2003 SP2 or Windows XP SP3. Anyone else see this behavior, or know why I'm experiencing this headache? ----------------------------------- Layout of my paritions as follows: Disk 0 - ICH9R (RAID10) VOL0 - Volume 0 - Primary Partition (active) 40GB, system partition - Extended …

Headphones and Speakers

I transcribe using headphones with Express Scribe or RC Player, but I really miss working while classical music plays in the background. Is there anyway to configure my Windows XP so ITunes will play through the speakers and my transcription programs play through the headphones and they do not overlap? I have Creative Soundblaster Live 24-bit speakers. I plug my headphones in my front jack of my Dell Dimension 8400.

Unresponsive at login

We have 2 Dell servers purchased at the same time last year and configured exactly the same. They run a web application, HTTP, FTP and SMTP. The problem is that every fews days to a few weeks, we never know when, the server will become unresponsive when logging in to the console. This happens whether we log in at the monitor, using the remote access card or the rdp console. We get a black screen for about 30 - 45 minutes and either have to reboot or wait it out. During that time the server can be pinged but the web sites cannot be reached. There are no System or Application errors or even warnings in Microsoft. There are no viruses or trojans on the ser…

Moving Certificate Services from 2000 to 2003
by Guest Cyberwiz64- 0 replies

I am running Windows 2003 on my DCs. My CA is installed on a Windows 2000 server. I would like to move my certificate services from 2000 to a 2003 server. I saw the article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/298138/en-us but it says I have to upgrade the CA to 2003. I cannot do that because of other services running on the box. I want to get my CA on 2003 so it will support the autoenrollment of certificates feature. Does anyone know if... I can move my CA to another 2000 box and then upgrade the new CA to 2003 with minimal disruption? Any assistance is appreciate. Thank you.

Incomplete printing on HP via TS
by Guest Bruce D- 1 reply

Hello all, I have a somewhat odd problem. The TS is a 6 month old 2003 R2 svr with plenty of RAM and drive space, and is a replacement for an older TS (which did not have this problem). So, here goes: When a client prints to an HP Officejet All-in-one 4110, I can see the job spool to the TS queue, then to the local queue, and then disappear from both queues as if it had printed. AND, the local printer starts to react; it warms up and moves the carriage back and forth several times. And then it's done. It does not pick up a piece of paper, and it does not print - but the event log says it was a successful print job. (Yes, the printers work when used l…

I have WinXP Pro SP3 and I can't get the display screen on a laptop to shut down after the prescribed time. In Control Panel I go to Display and Screen Saver and the click Power. I set Turn off monitor after 15 minutes. When I go up to Power Schemes and click SaveAs I get error message "Indicates two revision levels are incompatible." All updates are up to date. What could be happening? The screen never shuts down. Thank you

Hi, When you're using the shutdown command, you can give a shutdown reason (for example, shutdown /r /d p:4:2). Is there any place w/ list of those reasons, major and minor? Thanks in advance :) -- --------------------- Google is your best friend! Sincerely, TacticalSniper http://www.abacomputers.co.il/

preventing Windows Explorer address bar from searching
by Guest Ideas Live- 5 replies

If I have a Windows Explorer window open and just want to go to a specific directory, I'm used to just typing in the address bar, for example "c:\temp". But when I do this, Windows is trying to guess what I'm searching for. This always messes up what I'm typing. I type "c:\temp", then after a couple of seconds, the address bar shows "c:\" or "My Documents". I don't want Windows to do this for me. I just want to specify a directory myself. Thanks in advance, Brian

Windows keeps shutting down without asking it to, does anyone know
by Guest Barbara- 5 replies

I have been constantly having a problem with my computer shutting down without my asking it to shut down. I'll be in the middle of doing something on the computer and the next thing I know it's rebooting. I've tried narrowing it down to see what is causing it and cannot pinpoint the problem because I'm not always in the same program when it happens. We've tried doing a scan disk, we've tried defragging the computer, we've tried repairing it and a few other ideas and nothing is working. Can someone please help me figure out what the problem is and how to fix it?

upon login, xp intermittently locks up before desktop starts
by Guest Adurr- 4 replies

Intermittently, individual desktop Windows XP Professional systems in my company will lock up at the baby-blue desktop right after login authenticates. I've let it sit for 15 minutes and it does nothing. The only way to get out of it is to hit control-alt-delete > task manager > file > new task > explorer.exe and everything starts up as normal. Event Viewer doesn't seem to have anything that stands out. This happens perhaps 40% of the time, seemingly randomly. The only thing that I found that makes it go away for a little while is to repair windows, install another verision of windows over the current version, unfortunetly this only…

Windows 2003 standard w/ XP clients. All of our printers are networked so we install the printers on the terminal server. Is there a way to block clients from redirecting their local printer into the terminal side using GP? Thanks in advance.
