Windows Server 2003 does not open its own share
by Guest amzd- 1 reply

Hello, I observed a funny thing. We have several Windows Server 2003/Terminal Server 2003. They are part of a domain, let us call it .pac. Let us call one server Munich. The servers have several shares, let us call one share on Munich "Inside". On server munich I open The Run-Window (Start, run) and then typ in: \\munich.pac\Inside The Server does not open the share, it asks for authentication which never works. I alway receive: Logon unsuccessful. Windows is unable to log you on. Be sure that your user name and password are correct. If I type in: \\munich\Inside then it opens the share immediately without any question. If I go to another windows server …

Roaming profile security
by Guest Joe Brown- 1 reply

I want a few people on our help desk to have the ability to delete roaming profiles. I've created a Profile Admins group and added it to the security list for pcprofiles folder. If I check the box to replace permissions on child objects the Profile Admins group gets added to exisiting profile folders. New profiles, however, do not get the Profile Admins group when they get created because the new profiles do not have the box checked to inherit permissions. How do I fix this to where that box is checked for new profiles? We do not manually create the roaming profile.

Question about the /NUMPROC switch in MSCONFIG.

Can you set this to the number of processors in your pc say a dual core or a quad core processor? Someone had a video on youtube saying this would increase boot time and I read another article saying it was bogus. /NUMPROC is located in the boot tab under Advanced options in both XP and Vista.

Explorer sorts funny
by Guest Three Lefts- 4 replies

I just noticed some odd sorting behavior by Windows Explorer. When sorted by name, Explorer lists these folders in this order: 00 0A 01 A0 A1 AA Why is [0A] between [00] and [01]? The 0's are all numeric zeroes, not the letter "O". I pasted these into Word and they sort as I would expect: 00 01 0A A0 A1 AA I did a little more experimenting. Explorer sorts the following folders in this order: 1A 02 2A 03 3A 04 4A 05 5A 06 6A 07 7A 08 8A 10 11 12 13 What is going on here?

Exact sorting order windows explorer
by Guest BartDesc- 1 reply

Hello, I know that XP handles numerical parts different from previous windows versions but this is not my question. I just want to know if there is a list (explanation) of how xp does sort. Especially concerning special characters. Do they come before numericals or after. What is their order? What comes before '-' and after '_'. ... Is there like a list (like with ASCII sorting) that tells you what comes in front of what? Thank in advance Bart

Changing default sort order in XP?
by Guest Pheasant PluckerĀ®- 8 replies

Hi there, Using XP and have noticed that the default sort order is different to that of Windows 2000 and below. I have seen references to changing the sort order but that only seems to apply to numbers and not letters? In XP for example if I add a new file into a folder that already contains files then it can be displayed anywhere, at the bottom or randomly somewhere. This is annoying and when I next go into that same folder I have to hunt around to find the file but in a large folder I sometimes miss it. In W2K & below the new file was automatically inserted in its correct alphabetical sort order. I am guessing this behaviour can be changed bu…

Some anomalies after reinstallation

Hi all, I recently wiped my sisters computer clean (fdisk and slow format) and reinstalled WinXP Home fresh. She has a 3 yr old Dell Dimension. She was not able to find her Win XP or driver discs. I used my copy of win xp, but used her product key from the label on her computer and it activated fine. I am having two problems that are more annoyance than anything: First, when you reboot the computer, when still in the bios a screen comes up that says, "Please select operating system" Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition and there is a count down waiting for me to pick one or the other. If I choose the …

Cant access XP Pro normal/safe/last good config

Hi all, I have a PC at work which I did a clean install of XP Pro on a few weeks ago. It has been used very infrequently only by me, for non- internet purposes (so no viruses/spyware etc for sure - and I am the only person with access to this office). Yesterday morning I came into work to find that one of my PCs did not power on at all. The following happened (in order): 1. Switched PSU off from back, turned it on again - no result 2. Unplugged and re-plugged power cable in case it was loose - no result 3. Switch power cable for another one - the PC powers on - NOTE : The "faulty" cable works on another PC - and I'm not crazy! =) 4. When PC powers o…

View Available Wireless Networks...?
by Guest Kenneth- 5 replies

\ Howdy, If I click to "View Available Wireless Networks" the list populates with one correct network, but also includes several that are not, in fact, available. Those that are not available includes networks that I had logged on to at an earlier time, and at other locations. Why would they be listed as "available", and might there be a way to eliminate them from the list? Many thanks, -- Kenneth If you email... Please remove the "SPAMLESS."

XP SP3 Repeating reboots.
by Guest Harold A Climer- 12 replies

Is there a version of XP SP3 that already takes into account that the original OS image file came from a computer with an Intel CPU as opposed to an AMD CPU that is on my HP Pavilion A1520N? I tried installing XP SP3 on my Pavilion A1520N and got the repeating re-boot problem. I finally had to reinstall the whole OS from the recovery disks a got from HP. I do not want to have to do that again, and I am a bit leery of fooling around with the registry. Harold A. Climer Dept. XP update, now won't boot
by Guest DZ- 1 reply

Hey everyone, Last night I updated my PC (SP 3?), and now all I get is a black screen with a blinking cursor. I have a removable hard drive and last night I was using my 320 gb one. Today when I check the BIOS, it doesn't see my hard drive. It does see the DVD, USB devices, etc. When I use my 120 gb hard drive it does the same thing. The 120 gb was updated the other day and everything worked, although I had to go into the BIOS and tell it to boot to the hard drive. Both hard drives worked until after last nights updates. Any ideas? -- DZ

Quick Java Question
by Guest Danger_Duck- 5 replies

Now that Microsoft has J++, does it have a forum for general Java questions? While I'm at it I might as well give it a try here, since you guys seem knowledgeable about just about anything regarding computers: Is there a method in String, Integer, or other classes that will return the integer within a string like: int a = ClassName.method("I have 7 peanuts"); System.out.print(a); Output: 7 Again, while the answer to the questions would be fabulous, it would be even more fabulous for me to find out if there's a good place to ask such things. Thanks!
