SharedAccess error in Event Viewer
by Guest wings- 0 replies
I am getting service timeout errors for the SharedAccess service being reported in event viewer. On investigation I found that the service is not listed in the list of active services but there is an entry for it in the registry. I understand that the SharedAccess service is for the firewall and Internet Connection Sharing. I use a third party firewall (Zone Alarm) and do not use ICS, so I assume that this is why the service is not running. The question is why am I getting reported errors when I am not using the functions that rely on this service? Any help would be appreciated.

by Guest Haggis- 13 replies

I have an odd issue. the scenario is this. i have a server (A) connected to a UPS that is set to run a batch file when the battery power gets to some predetermined level. THis batch file is a remote shutdown command to bring down the another server (B) connected to the UPS. As part of the test i send a command line email before and after the remote shutdown command so that i know that it has run. Now the remote shutdown command runs properly when i test it on the Server (A) and both emails are sent. When i test it on the UPS, the emails are sent but the remote shutdown command fails. I cannot understand why, it is obvious that the command is running bu…

Moving C:\Documents and Settings.

Windows XP Home, SP3. I am running out of space on my 16GB C: drive. I only have 1.58 GB left. I have plenty of vacant space on my 58.8GB D: drive (40.6 GB free). Whenever possible I install new programs to the D: drive. I have moved a lot of old programs files from the C: drive to the D: drive and then used a registry checker to move the registry addresses to the new drive. My C:\Documents and Settings Folder has 3.81GB of files. I am hoping to move the whole D&S folder to the D: drive to free up those 3.81 GBs of space on C:. Can this be done? -- Bill

Can't boot - black screen blinking cursor
by Guest operaflute- 23 replies

I've got XP Pro on my Dell Inspiron 8600 (SP 2 but same problem after I got SP3) I upgraded the hard drive with a 160GB Western Digital Scorpio Drive in November 2007. All sources called it compatible and all had been well until now. New RAM card a month ago - again confirmed compatible, and, to date, not implicated. Problem: after shutting down, computer will not reboot. After the Dell splash screen, I get a black screen with a blinking cursor and I can not type. Quick diagnostics give me the error: DST Short Test Fail Error 1000-0142 Unit 4: Drive Self Test Failed Status byte 79 Repeats of the above test now tell me: DST Short Test Fail …

bouncing cursor!

In both, outlook express and wordperfect, when I try to write, at every few letter-hits, the cursor suddenly, inexplicably jumps backward to insert the intended letters into already written texts. I have tried everything to avoid it (e.g. writing slowly, one letter at- a-time). Nothing works. Any advice or ideas about how to fix this?? Laptop HP Pavillium XP Thanks Boticelli

DST Patches for Windows 2003
by Guest Randy- 1 reply

Hi, I have servers that have been patched in the past with the DST patches provided by Microsoft but then I came across http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951072 the other day. Do I need to apply this DST patch to my servers that have all ready been patched? Are there any implications of applying this to a Windows 2003 server that has already been patched in the past? Thanks in advance!

category requires a value

Hello, I tried to send a message to a website "contact us" form. At the end of the form I was asked to type in two words from a dialog box, matching what I saw, then hit the continue button to send the message. I keep getting a pop-up dialog box, I assume from Windows, telling me: ! category requires a value. No attempts to redo the typing will keep me from getting the same pop-up message. What can I do to send the message? I am running Windows XP. Thanks.

Defragment drive C:
by Guest Frank Janicke- 7 replies

my HD is partitioned in drive C: for programs and D: for my files. C is now full and when I defragment I get a list of about 20 files that cannot be defragmented. They are all large files with 114MB. File names are: \WINDOWS\Installer\e0128c.msp or ...\44c009.msp etc File extensions are all .msp When I try to locate them for deletion, they do not show up. Any idea what and where they are and how I can get rid of them to make more space on C: ? Thanks for any tips
