CI files growing and reducing C drive disk space
by Guest lmhaggblom@besafeandfree.org- 1 reply

On Monday, 09/29/08, my Windows Server 2003 system told me I was low on system resources, and when I checked, I only had 700 MB of 12 GB left of free disk space when I should of had 2.27 GB free space. The problem was the "CIfiles" folder, which held a 500 MB .ci file. The number in the file name was also on three other files, but they were small. The windows.edb file was 1GB. So, we stopped the Windows Search service, deleted all four "CIfiles" folder files with the filename of the 500 MB, and emptied the recycle bin. Then, the windows.edb file shrunk and the disk space increased back to 2.27 GB free space. We restarted the Windows Search service, and this…

Setup.Exe's
by Guest KenP- 1 reply

Hi, I have two PC's that will not run a setup.exe program. I put the CD in the CD-ROM and nothing happens. I got to My Computer and try to run setup.exe and nothing happens. No error msg, no window pops up, etc. I also tried to download the file from the Internet and run it and same happens. If I take same CD to another/other PC, it runs just fine. Someone said it could be a problem with Windows Installer. Any help in solving this problem will be greatly appreciated. KenP

Problem with DVD/CD drive and sound card.

A couple weeks ago my computer simply stopped working. OfficeXP was gone and IE7 would not open. I reinstalled WindowsXP Pro and OfficeXP as well as IE7 and got things working again. Now the CD drive will not work. You insert a game CD and the game appears to boot up without selecting the shortcut but if you try to play you are prompted to insert the CD. Also there is no sound coming out of the external speakers. I have run AVG virus scan repeatedly for these two weeks even in safe mode and find nothing. Any ideas?

Windows Updates Fail After SP3 Update
by Guest WJB- 6 replies

Hi, I updated Windows XP Pro to SP3 and now none of the Windows updates (or upgrade from IE6 to IE7 either) will run successfully. All updates fail almost immediately. I was actually rebuilding my laptop and after installing WinXP Pro with SP2, I decided to first upgrade to SP3 prior to installing any other software. So my question is: How reliable is SP3 and should I bactrack and rebuild again, but stay with SP2? I have a bunch of other problems since the SP3 upgrade, one of which is posted in this group as well. Thanks

by Guest mtj7009- 9 replies

All of a sudden, we are unable to RDP to a Windows 2003 Server. It could possible be a windows update that caused the issue but not sure which one. I have run Wireshark to make sure that tcp port 3389 traffic is hitting the server and it is. On the client it says unable to connect to RDP. Short of rebuilding the server are there any options or troubleshooting steps i should take? Windows Server 2003 SP2. Firewall is off completely. Thanks

Hello, one of my coworkers I work with turned on his computer and typed in his username and password and it came up, but like if it was the first time that he logged onto that computer. When I went to see the local users and gropus, I have Administrator, Maintenance Director (this is his username) and Guest. Everything seems to be fine there and in fact I could log on with his regular username and password, but for some reason it was like he never logged on before. He does have access now to his email and internet as I set up the internet again and his email in Outlook (although he has set up a cox email acocunt and it wasnt set up to save messages on the…

Strange Characters When Viewing Outlook Express messages
by Guest Pete B- 17 replies

Running WinXP Pro SP3. When I open or view most OEx6 messages, I get some rather strange font characters in my email messages I receive. For example, I receive the MS Technet posts and here is a line of text from the latest: "First up, weâ?Tll bring you up to speed on several of the new offerings around Windows Vista and the upcoming Windows Client. Youâ?Tll be hearing more about Windows 7 later this month, especially if youâ?Tre attending ..." Does anyone know how to get rid of those odd "â?T" text characters? I tried changing to different encoding settings for the fonts I use (Arial Black and Lucinda Console, Windows Euro encoding), it made some s…

I cannot fully disable the Indexing Service in Windows XP SP3 – it seems to start when Outlook Express is started. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have tried the following so far (sorry about the length of this posting): 1. For each of my hard disks (C: and F:): My Computer > Hard Disk Letter > Properties > Uncheck box for Allow Indexing Service to index this disk 2. Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > in left panel, Services and Applications > Indexing Service > on Action menu, clicked Stop > on Action menu, point to All Tasks > click Tune Performance > Customize > set Indexing Perfor…

Problem with taskbar hiding the bottom of window
by Guest EszterLud- 6 replies

A friend did who knows what with her XP and now: the taskbar hides the bottom of all windows (incl. scrollbars, etc) both in maximized and normal size mode. The taskbar is set to "always visible", "auto-hide" is off, "lock" is on. I never seen such a thing in my life, I'm totally buffled what she might have done. I have tried to set the resolution back and forth, switch locked and auto-hide, restart...nothing helps. Maybe she clicked a shortcut, but I do not see logic in taskbar hiding the bottom of windows. Anyone encountered something similar? Or is it some kind of bug?
