"install important updates" at Windows XP SP3 shutdown - huh?
by Guest foobar5@home.com- 22 replies

I have XP SP3. When I went to shut my computer down tonight, instead of the normal standby, turn off, restart popup, I had that, but there was a Windows security shield superimposed on the turn off icon, and a message at the bottom of the popup saying "Click Turn Off to install important updates and turn off your computer. Click here to turn off without installing updates." This scares and weirds me out. I have Windows set up to download updates automatically, but only install after I review/approve the updates. But the little yellow Updates shield isn't showing in my system tray area. I went to Windows update and the last activity was September 9, wh…

reset IPC$ number
by Guest Tester- 4 replies

Hello there, Is there a way to reset or decrease the number of IPC$ logged under computer management, shared folders, shares on an XP machine? My goal is to reduce the number of client connections. I have an XP machine sharing some folders and although the number of incoming PCs connecting to the shares is only 5 I am already getting no more connections can be made to this machine error. I noticed the IPC$ is high under the client connections, the shared folders connections is normal. With only 5 PCs connected to shares I already have 10 or more IPC$ counting against the client connections limit. Thank you, T

58 seconds delay before next fax can be received
by Guest wildeskraut@googlemail.com- 0 replies

OS: Win 2003 Faxboard: Diva Analog-4 (4 ports) If I receive a fax it takes almost a whole minute (58 seconds) before I can receive the next fax, the line does not pick up calls during that time. If I start a CAPI application the line is always free if no fax is being received. My configuration does not allow any outgoing faxes on that two involved lines, so this can not be a reason for this problem. Is there such a built in delay in Microsoft fax? Thank you for your time Oliver

Since I used my restore disk and reinstalled everything, my background is just a gray screen. I have the updated video driver installed. Now when I go to Desktop Properites I can see the correct picture on the little monitor but still not on the desktop. I was told that there might be a program that is blocking the background from showing on the desktop and that there also might be a program that will disable the problem and fix my background. Im also using Win XP with SP 3 Can anyone help???

Keeping envelope fonts Times New Roman
by Guest Michael O.- 10 replies

I want all my envelope addresses to be Times New Roman just as my writing is, but whenever I click to print an envelope I see Ariel. I have to laboriously change both the sending and return address using the options bar, then do it again for the next envelope. Naturally, I tried the format font tool on the menu bar, choosing Times New Roman and making it my default. But it doesn't work. What can I do?

Just got a new usb 4g SanDisk Cruzer jump drive. Plugged into my desktop and it worked fine. Copied files to and from. Plugged into my laptop and Windows XP SP3 sees the new drive being installed in the tray but when I go to "My Computer" the system doesn't give me a drive icon. I can go to "CMD" prompt and change to f: and type"dir" and it sees the drive in DOS. What gives??

Help: When surfing the internet, my Web browser hangs
by Guest Eran Karu- 1 reply

When I surf the internet, my Web browser, Internet Explorer 7 or Opera 9.6, occasionally bombs. Only my Web browser hangs, not the entire system that crashes. I try several times to kill the process of the hanged Web browser but futile. So I have to reboot my computer system by pressing power "on/off" button. I try hard to find out what causes the problem but I can not find an answer at all. In other words, I do not know whether hardware problems, software bugs or some erroneous web sites cause my Web browser to hang. Whenever I click any link to any other web site, a web site partly appears on my computer screen then stops and the small icon at the top an…

Searching for text within files
by Guest Rick- 7 replies

I want to find files in a directory that contain the string 'syscolumns'. I know for a fact that several ordinary ASCII text files (extension .SQL) contain that string. They're not hidden or system files. I load up Search and in the 'A word or phrase in the file' edit box I enter syscolumns. My other options: 'All or Part of the File Name' is blank When Was It Modified = Don't Remember What Size Is It = Don't Remember Under 'More Advanced Options', everything is unchecked I click Search and it doesn't find any files. Same thing with several other strings I look for. Am I doing something wrong? It seems to work fine when I'm looking for a strin…

Don't See Program Running in Task Manager Logged on Remotely
by Guest meangene- 2 replies

Running MS Win Server 2003 R2 Std. I have a couple of programs (.exe) that I need running to import/export data between our ERP and another application. When I start these two programs running from the console but then come in remotely (RDC) and log in with same ID/password, do not see them running. Of course, if I start them up remotely, then they conflict with each other and crash. Vendor and I have agreeded to start/stop them while logged in remote with same ID/password and disconnect remote session (not log off). Question - is there a way that we can start the programs running at the console and still see them in task manager with a remote log in to ve…
