Hello, I am new here. I generally leave my computer on and occassionaly I will come back to my pc after 5 minutes having been working on important documentation and find that an automatic update has occured and my pc has restarted. I then lose valuable data - end up cursing and generally it ruins the rest of my day. I am sure the Microsoft guys get a kick out of ruining people's days but HOW DO I DISABLE AN AUTOMATIC RESTART! McAfee requests that I restart - so how do I do the same for my Microsoft restart. I am fearing for the safety of my PC because this is driving me to madness.

Windows ME - help disabling startup programs from dos prompt
by Guest jag53- 9 replies

I am working on a Windows ME system, that I cannot get to reboot. It is set to immediately scanreg, then has this UPS warning program that comes on. I try to get into msconfig immediately upon reboot but by the time that screen comes up it sends the system into immediate reboot again. I did a scanreg /restore back to a previous date but has not helped. Also went into system.ini from dos prompt and changed shell=explorer.exe to shell=progman.exe. It gets to the progman.exe and just starts to open, send it to an immediate reboot. Do not have system CD for Windows ME, but was able to create the start up disc. Any idea what file I could access from the…

by Guest Danny F- 1 reply

I have an issue that has been driving me insane. I have 4 Windows XP Pro SP3 workstations. All the Accounting Dept PC’s. I also have an old Windows 2000 SP4 Server that I want to take offline and decommission. The problem is as soon as I disconnect this server or shut it down. The 4 workstations slow to a crawl. Not just on the network but performance as well. Here is the scenario: Workstation 1 connected to network and Server Old connected to network. Everything works great, PC’s screaming fast. Unplug network cable of ServerOld, workstation1 slows to a crawl. Open command prompt and type notepad to open notepad 60 seconds before notepad opens. (I…

We are having issues with our exchange 2003 server. For some reason, the Exchange System Attendant wont start. It comes up with Error 1068: The depedency or service group failed to start We need a fix asap as there are alot of people in our company which rely on the exchange server to run (for obvious reasons). All permissions are in place, we have restarted DNS, and rebooted our Active Directory servers. Please advise Regards

restart problem
by Guest oldbiker- 3 replies

We are sometimes told "please reboot your computer" If I do this by closing down and then switching on again (a cold boot) all is fine, BUT if I do this by clicking restart (a hot boot), the computer shuts down tries to switch on again and after being given the option to go into bios the screen goes black and the message "error loading operating system" appears. If I now cut the power and switch on again it boots up fine. What is going on?

to All that answered the Modem-Details post(s)

Again, I thank all of you for input. The problem turned out to be a need for a 'Firm-ware' update,, even though the modem was only purchased a few months ago. Moral of story,,, dont use 'virginbroadband' as an isp,, cos' Richard will be out Ballooning across the country rather than looking after his customers. Thanks to all again.

After security update Office XP keeps asking for accepting end userlicense
by Guest yaro137@googlemail.com- 0 replies

After installing a security update for Office XP I'm getting a pop up message asking to accept end user license before I can use Word or Excel. All would be fine if it wasn't the terminal server where users connect to access Office applications. They can't accept the license as you need administrative privileges to do that so basically they get stuck till they contact me so I can log in as admin and accept the license for them. How do I set them up so they can accept that license themselves when it pops up again? yaro

Run task before logging off?
by Guest simonc- 2 replies

I made some temporary changes to various security settings for a particular purpose and know there is a danger I'll forget to reset them afterwards. Is there any way you can get a reminder/task to run whenever you try to log off/shut down which would prompt you to reset them? Grateful for ideas.

Issue: Generally performance ok on x64, all drivers up to date as are patches. When running 32bit applications such as IE or even mpsreports the cpu utilisation jumps to almost 50% making everything very poor. This obviously has issues for a lot of applications. Any thoughts? Thanks TC

Have a problem with TS logon. 2003 server, I can RDC into the server with any account other than the built in Administrator account. When I RDC into server with this account, it allows me to log in, then get a blank desktop. This will stay this way for a little while and then auto log me out. I have tried logging with a second connection to no avail. I can use Ctrl-Shift-End and bring up Taskmgr, nothing else is running. Cannot see the taskbar or any icons? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
