Guest Roget168 Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 I built a computer w/ Intel Core 2 Dual processor on an Intel board. Everything was working great for a few days now it's on a constant reboot. I've heard there are rebooting issues after SP3 w/ HP and AMD desktops, does anyone know if SP3 affects Intel based computers? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Guest PA Bear [MS MVP] Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 Re: Constant reboot after SP3 Did the problem start immediately after you installed SP3? Did you install SP3 via Windows Update or manually? What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running in the background when you installed SP3? Guest Gerry Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 Re: Constant reboot after SP3 What is the computer make and model. What exactly do you have by way of a Windows XP CD? Are you seeing a Stop Error Report? If yes what does it say? Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click on the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced, Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before Automatically Restart. Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure until you have resolved the problem. Check for variants of the Stop Error message. An alternative is to keep pressing the F8 key during Start-Up and select option - Disable automatic restart on system failure. If you are using a wireless keyboard and the F8 key does not work substitute a wired keyboard and mouse for this exercise only. What is the position regarding data on the disk? Did you have a backup or is it necessary to recover data? -- Hope this helps. Guest Roget Luo Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 Re: Constant reboot after SP3 No, the system worked for a few days until it crashed today. No, anti-spyware or 3rd party software, it's a computer inside of a hardware firewall. Guest Roget Luo Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 Re: Constant reboot after SP3 I built the system myself w/ new Intel motherboard and processor, w/ Kingston RAM, no unknown brand. XP corporate edition CD w/ SP2. There is no stop error, it gets to the initial Windows XP screen then it reboots. It will get the the option for booting into Safe mode, Last good configuration or normal boot up. I have tried all of them and all goes into the XP screen then reboots. Guest Gerry Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 Re: Constant reboot after SP3 Roget Disconnect all hardware except keyboard, mouse and monitor and try booting again. You need to disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click on the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced, Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before Automatically Restart. A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315222/en-us The system may not boot but it might generate the Stop Error message so that you can get a clue as to the nature of the problem. -- Hope this helps. Since SP2 does not support some of the Core 2 based chipsets, it may be contributing to your issue. - Thee Chicago Wolf
