Re: Problem downloading

[We meet again!]

Is Automatic Updates enabled? Are you attempting to install KB950759 via

Windows Update website or manually?

Go to Windows Update website and open your Update History: What were the

last five (5) updates that were successfully installed, when were they

installed, and how were they installed? Example: "Security Update for

Windows XP (KBnnnnnn); 01 Jan-08; Windows Update"

Actually, your 2 problems may be related (so I'm crossposting this reply to

WinXP General):

If ZA Pro, see if disabling it and then enabling the Windows Firewall fixes

the problem.

If ZA Free, see if uninstalling it via Add/Remove Programs and then enabling

the Windows Firewall fixes the problem. (Very often just disabling ZA Free

doesn't work.)

========================

One thing we haven't covered yet: Are you running WinXP SP2 or WinXP SP3?

Re: Problem downloading

Re: Problem downloading

Hi there - I'm so glad it's you. I'm also worried the issues are related!

I downloaded new Norton at beginning of June.

On 10th June, Microsoft put out a new Windows "Cummulative Security update"

to protect against possible intruders taking over pc... "Security issues have

been identified that could allow an attacker to compromise a computer running

Microsoft Internet Explorer and gain control over it. You can help protect

your computer by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install

this item, you may have to restart your computer."

I have Windows Automatic Update on, but for some reason this file did not

download (maybe because it is a large file and I am not on internet for long

enough periods for it to have completed the download?)

I have just been trying (for hours) to download it without sucess (if I

acess from my pcs Update manager it does nothing (per below), and if I update

directly from MS website my internet connection keeps dropping).

What do you think? Could it actually have been a coincidence (Norton &

Security Update at similar timing) and the MS update may solve it?

Given I have scanned my pc with both Norton and Avira with absolutely no

virus threats found, could I still have been invaded?

I am going to try and get the file downloaded via a friends pc (cannot do

this till next Monday).

My Windows Update reports appear good - I have everything via Automatic

Update daily except:

Cummulative Security Update(per above) and

XP Service Pack 3 (which has a 4 hour download time)

I have WinXP SP2.

What order should I do things (I have ZoneAlarm Free which I would have to

remove - should I try the Security Update option first?)?

Thanks for your patience and help. I really appreciate it.

Re: Problem downloading

Re: Problem downloading

> I downloaded new Norton at beginning of June.

In your other thread, you've told me that you've since uninstalled the

Norton application and (at my recommendation) also ran the Norton Removal

Tool.

Yes, please uninstall ZA Free firewall, enable the Windows Firewall,

*reboot*, and try installing KB950759 (and any other critical updates) via

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com ...or try downloading the update (SAVE it

to your desktop, do not RUN it) and installing it manually:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=FBC31BDE-0BF5-490C-96A8-071310D9464A

Also, please post the information I asked for in my previous reply:

>> Go to Windows Update website and open your Update History: What were the

>> last five (5) updates that were successfully installed, when were they

>> installed, and how were they installed? Example: "Security Update for

>> Windows XP (KBnnnnnn); 01 Jan-08; Windows Update"

ONLY A QUESTION, NOT A RECOMMENDATION! => Do you have an available Restore

Point that predates the install of the Norton software?

Re: Problem downloading

Re: Problem downloading

Hi PA Bear.

1. I have done as instructed :

- uninstalled ZA/ enabled Windows fiewall

- manually installed KB950759 from a friend’s download

- updated Avira

2. Update history as requested:

Windows XP Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP

(KB950759) 24 June 2008 Windows Update - cancelled

Windows XP Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP

(KB950759) 24 June 2008 Windows Update - cancelled

Windows XP Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP

(KB950759) 24 June 2008 Windows Update - cancelled

Windows XP Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP

(KB950759) 24 June 2008 Windows Update - failed

Windows XP Windows XP Service Pack 3 (KB936929) 24 June 2008 Windows Update

- failed

Windows XP Windows XP Service Pack 3 (KB936929) 24 June 2008 Windows Update

- cancelled

Windows XP Windows XP Service Pack 3 (KB936929) 24 June 2008 Windows Update

- failed

Windows XP Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130) 24 June

2008 Windows Update - succeeded

Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB951376) 22 June 2008 Automatic

Updates - succeeded

Windows XP Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - June 2008 (KB890830)

13 June 2008 Automatic Updates - succeeded

3. Restore Point : confess I have never done a system restore – I backup my

files to disk on 2 weekly basis (not even sure how Restore Point works…

sorry).

4. Status:

Internet connection “seemed” more stable to begin with, but still keeps

disconnecting (curiously enough (maybe coincidental) it often disconnects

when I try to write on this webpage!).

5. Other:

Main thing I have done is the Avira update, but I did notice one weird thing

(which may be a clue to you…): it was only a file of about 8,000 kB. I had

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ELSE open, but it showed me a download speed of 2kB/sec

(normal speed is 50.6 kB7sec). What on Earth could be going on? Why is it so

slow? Could there be anything else running (and how could I see?). Could

there be a problem with telephone line? Or my modem? What could cause 2 kB

speed please? If I click on the network traffic icon on the bottom toolbar it

said

Sent: 305, 000 bytes

Received: over 9 million!!!!!!!

I haven't been doing anything - is my pc doing something on it's own???

Thanks for your continued guidance, L

Re: Problem downloading

Re: Problem downloading

Additional (to my other reply):

I understand why Avira so slow (apparently it is always slow as it's free)

so don't think that is hiding a problem.

I have decided to go to Broadband, but would like to be sure all works here

before I go ahead.

1. How can I check my modem is not faulty (I checked all the physical

connections before)?

2. I have never been able to do the "repair" that is often suggested in

these problem pages. When I do "start" "control panel" "network settings" and

right click, I do not have the "repair" option available.

3. My ISP says nothing is wrong with my line - is there any way I can check

from this end/ is there anything else I can check please?

Hoping for some further guidance - disconnect still happening as before.

Regards.

[My apologies. Somehow your reply didn't show up as one of my "watched"

threads so I overlooked it earlier.]

Please confirm that Windows Update no longer offers the machine KB950759.

If you want to continue persuing this here, please examine your

WindowsUpdate.log for errors associated with the two (2) failed installs

above, then tell me what you've found.

Although System Restore appears to be a moot issue now, see...

Dunno, but it could be due to excessive demand (i.e., on Avira's end).

Other than testing your dial-up connection at another location (e.g., a

friend's house), best take the machine in to a reputable local shop if you

suspect something's amiss.

continue crossposting replies about your connection to that newsgroup.]

Re: Problem downloading

I confirm that Windows Update no longer offers the machine KB950759.

I will now reply to the rest in “Internet Disconnect” thread.
