Guess I should have done more homework before purchasing because I didn't recognize 's' mode as being 'a thing'. I do not need or want the limitations, as this is to be a working computer, not just a web appliance. It seems easy enough to take it out of S mode, and that would put me where I want to be, but one statement I've read is a bit puzzling. From From https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4020089/windows-10-in-s-mode-faq: I read this statement: If you switch out of S mode, you can install 32-bit (x86) Windows apps that aren’t available in the Microsoft Store in Windows.
