Hi guys

Some time ago through a link in this forum I downloaded the' Crypto Monitor pro free' program under the illusion it gave me protection just like an AV against all ransomeware.

Seeing the recent posts by Pete and Ken regarding the Jigsaw ransomeware attacks I doubt I have protection otherwise Crypto Monitor would be the answer all ransomeware attacks!

Can someone please clarify if at all if I have any protection and if not is there a programme I can obtain that does give full protection

Thanks

Ray

Hi Ray,

Can someone please clarify if at all if I have any protection and if not is there a programme I can obtain that does give full protection

Sadly no program can guarantee 100% safety.

The bad guys keep moving the goalposts all the time.

Crypto Monitor is still worth having as it does not rely on definitions to protect you from encrypting ransomware.

It relies on behavioral detection, that allows it to detect encrypting ransomware before it has a chance to encrypt your data.

So basically Crypto Monitor looks for a certain pattern of behavior on your system and blocks it.

This is the best way to detect ransomware as it doesn't rely on definitions ( which can be changed by the bad guys)

A lot of ransomware comes from infected attachments in emails.... so always use caution when opening an attachment.

If your not expecting it... don't open it.

and like we always say.... make sure that you have recent backups.

Ransomware is fairly easy to get rid of ... it's decrypting the files that causes most problems.

With recent backups, replacing the encrypted files is not a problem.

It may seem like a lot of work, but a 3 prong backup plan is always a good idea.... especially if your data is important to you.

  • Backup to a USB stick
  • Backup to an external hard drive
  • Backup to an online storage program.

With 3 separate copies, you are almost always guaranteed that one will work.

Make sure that the USB stick and the External hard drive are disconnected from the system after you have saved your backups.

Also a good idea is to create an 'Image' of your system that can be used in cases like this.

Read the article i posted on this:

How to create an image backup in Windows 10 and restore it, if need be

although posted in the Win10 forum, it works with Win8 as well.
