Good Afternoon,

I'm a first timer here and hope i will be able to learn more by joining this forum.

As I’m a late learner in using computers I have always relied on the automatic updates which hasn’t cause me any concern until a few months ago; where I started to get pressure pop-ups to install Windows 10

So at the young age of 70, I decided that enough is enough, and now I'm trying to take control in what is actually installed on my laptop by stopping all automatic updates and checking them out myself

I started by uninstalled KB3035583 which I was informed would hopefully stop the reacurrence of WINDOWS 10 reminder?

My very first check for updates was today and I noticed that the upgrade to Windows 10 is still showing and it even has a tick at the side of it “they are determined little buggers aren’t they”

The other 14 updates are classed as important but I see at least 2 that I may not need...is there an easy way to check these updates out

I would be grateful for your help

Thankyou

P.S. - you ought to see my update history - I can see at least 11 attempts to download Windows 10 and all have failed

Hi grandmasue and welcome to FPCH.

is there an easy way to check these updates out

Easiest way is to do a 'Google' search on the KB number.

It'll tell you everything you need to know.

Only install the important updates..... leave the recommended/optional ones out.

Windows 8.1 okay Windows 10, no thanks.

Hi Starbuck.

Thank you for your reply

The updates I have shown you are listed as important by Microsoft - so am I right in thinking that I cannot always assume this to be the truth and that they still have to be checked out?

Hi grandmasue

The free update to Win10 finishes on July 29th, so you would be wise to keep checking any updates until then if you don't want it.

At the moment M$ seem to be trying all sorts of tricks to get you to upgrade to Win10.

To be honest, what I do say is that if you have Win7 installed.... the upgrade may not be for you.

But if you have Win8.1 installed.... Win10 is a nice step up. ( if you can use Win8.1, you'll be comfortable using Win10 )

The Extended Support cycle for Windows 8.1 lasts until January 10, 2023 ..... so no rush if you are comfortable using it.

I didn't realize most of the problems were related to just Windows 7 when updating to 10

My understanding was Windows 10 might not support Coral painter X / Canon printer or even my Wacom pen tablet which I do most of my painting / designing on.

If my software is working correctly on Windows 8.1 can I assume that there won't be any problems with Windows 10 - also what useful extras will I actually gain from this download.

Sorry I don't mean to be a pain and take up any more of your time then necessary and I promise this will be my last question on this subject :)

A big thank you Starbuck for all your help

It's not that upgrading from Win7 to Win10 caused serious problems.... the layout is completely different.

That is what some people find hard.

My mother has just turned 84 and she upgraded from Win8.1 to Win10 .... she got to grips with it fairly quickly.

I've added some links that may be of use to you.

Windows 10 can run traditional Windows desktop applications.

Windows 10 is very similar to Windows 8 under the hood.

There are no huge application security model or driver architecture changes, as there were when moving from Windows XP to Windows Vista, or Windows XP to Windows 7.

In other words, if it runs on Windows 7 or 8, it’s almost guaranteed to run on Windows 10.

I had a problem with one of my WiFi dongles not working on Win10 .... I installed the Win8 driver and it worked fine.

Is Windows 10 Backwards Compatible With Your Existing Software?

Windows 8 vs Windows 10 comparison:

Don't forget that you can upgrade to Win10 and try it for 30 days.... if you can't get on with it within that time you can roll the system back to your previous Operating System:

I made a post about how to do this here:

How to Rollback to a previous version of Windows from Windows 10

It's not a problem at all.

We'd rather you get as much information as you need, before trying the upgrade.

Asking questions doesn't cost anything.
