Re: Media Player

Hello,

your computer is very likely infected by spyware/trojans.

I suggest a thorough spyware and virus scan.

Have you installed 3WPlayer? If so, either uninstall it or uninstall the

sponsor program:

Personally, I would uninstall the whole kit and caboodle and scan

thoroughly for malware.

Re: Media Player

I have AVG running and Ad-Aware and have also run Spybot. A recent full scan

by AVG showed nothing.

There is no sign of the prog. in Add/Remove or a sponser.

I am not sure of the advice to re-install with all the "anti" progs. turned

off as suggested on the plaon.play3W.com site.

Re: Media Player

Try scanning your computer with this online scanner:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Here's one discussion stating that the v3wplayer video files are just

encrypted AVIs:

http://forum.mininova.org/index.php?showtopic=234994521

Most of the postings about this player on the web seem to be of the opinion

that it is at best spyware, or installs spyware/malware. From what you

describe it certainly acts like malware.

One posting I read claimed that the licence agreement states:

" the license agreement in the installer for play3w (yes, read those things

once in a while!), it actually plainly says that it installs an auto search

in your browser and creates pop ups, and changes your home page, and sends

info about the websites you visit to the developer"

That sure reads like spyware, adware and malware all rolled into one if it is

true. In any case you don't need the player so might as well get rid of it.

Scan for malwares from here:

http://onecare.live.com/site/en-gb/default.htm?s_cid=sah

http://onecare.live.com/standard/en-gb/default.htm

Download these tools to see the running processes in real-time and you

can search them to make sure they are Legit.

"Process Explorer for Windows v10.21"

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/processexplorer.mspx

AutoRuns for Windows v8.61 By Mark Russinovich and Bryce Cogswell"

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx

The above will help you find or you can use the Search feature on XP and

Shift + Delete to bypass the Bin.

Re: Media Player

It might not even be on your computer. The message you get to use that

player is encoded within the video file(s). The videos were altered not to

play in normal players. The second link in my previous post discusses that.

TrendMicro AV supposedly quarantines related malware if it finds any.

Re: Media Player

Thanks for the help and advice. I have run Superantispy which appears to have

removed the 3wplayer and have also run the trendmicro prog. which found

another lot of nasties.
