My Documents folder disapears when not an Administrator....

Found a new twist on the missing My Documents in the My Computer folder...

If the user is anything but an Administrator, they loose their My Documents

folder. It looks like it is lost only for any number of users greater than 3

(not including the Guest / Administrator accounts). My 3rd 4th and 5th

accounts were madeas limited users and only the 3rd works properly in limited

mode. The 4th and 5th will show their My Documents folder only when they are

changed to Administrators...

The Power User permissions act the same as the limited user (User)

permissions.

 

HELP please...I really don't want my kids to get into the registry....

What has the registry got to do with "My Documents"?

 

When a user logs on for the first time then Windows will

create a profile folder for that user. It is visible under

c:\Documents and Settings\Jack (for example). This profile

folder contains (amongst other things) a subfolder called

"My Documents". Files and folders in

c:\Documents and Settings\Jack are inaccessible to other

users unless

a) the other user is an administrator, or

b) explicit access is granted to other users.

 

What you report about getting no access for the 4th, 5th

and 6th user makes no sense. Perhaps you moved the

"My Documents" folder out of its profile folder, or perhaps

you played with access permissions. I recommend that you

create a few accounts, log on to each of them and check

out where exactly "My Documents" is stored and how

the permissions are set. Clicking Start / Help, then searching

for help on "Permissions" might be helpful.

This is a fresh install of XP SP2. NONE of the My Documents files were

moved. All are in the original and correct place! They can still be

accessed from the start menu or from the folder listing in explorer.

 

Thing is there is no ICON in the main My Computer window under the "Files

Stored on This Computer" group unless the user is given administrator

priviledges. The Shared Documents is displayed fine...

 

It has to do with my kids accessing my/wifes files and being able to access

the registery if I make them administrators just to get the silly icon to

show up...It's what they are used to and how the bloody software is supposed

to work! (rant)

 

Thanks for responding...I have already searched and found the few good

workarounds (registery: explorer keys...moving their My Documents folder) to

no avail. Please continue to send your suggestions....

Folder permissions are not affected by the registry, nor is

the user/administrator setting. I think your best bet is to

follow the lead I gave you in my previous reply and explore

the technique for setting folder permissions. You must also

ensure that your children are ordinary users and not administrators.

If unsure of their status, do this:

- Click Start / Run / cmd {OK}

- Type these commands:

net user child1 {Enter} > c:\test.txt

net user child2 {Enter} >> c:\test.txt

notepad c:\test.txt

 

Replaced "child1", "child2" with the real account names,

then post the contents of c:\test.txt

It does sound like some kind of a permissions problem, since the My Docs

folder shows up when the account is given admin privileges. (admins can

see anyone's folder). You might want to check that the children's

accounts really do "own" their respective folders.

I looked at all the permissions...All the Users have "Full Control" in the

permissions tab, but in the owner tab it is listed as "administrators" (this

is for ALL folders in the Documents & Setings folder)....

 

Do I have to change the OWNERSHIP? (I really wouldn't think I should have

to!)

They are currently "Power Users".
