Network Adaptor failure

My OS is Windows XP service pack 2. The computer is Dell 4700c.

I had been having a problem connecting to the net. I contacted my isp who

directed me to Dell who sent me back to the isp. Apparently the IP address

was the culprit.

The isp sent some kind of signal to the modem and a new IP address appeared

and the net again was accessible. I just did a scan using the Network

Diagnostics in the Windows XP Professional Help and Support Center and the

only thing that failed was the Network Adaptor.

The specific entry is:

- Network Adapters FAILED.

- [00000001] Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller (FAILED).

+ IPAddress = 24.12.53.118 (FAILED)

I recall this being one of the things the isp checked as well as did Dell

support. What is the meaning of this. The system seems to be working ok.

Furthermore, I had always thought that the IP address did not change. I've

had this computer for 2 years and this is the first time the IP address was

changed.

Please advise.

Many thanks.

From what you've posted, I'm not sure why you are getting that error.

With additional information on how your network connection is configured

(subnet mask, is it static or dynamic addressing, etc) I might be able

to figure out what is causing it.

One easy option would be to update/reinstall the driver for the network

card. You can download the latest driver for the Broadcom network card

in your computer from the Dell support website

(http://ftp.dell.com/network/R76562.EXE). If your computer is using a

dynamic IP address (assigned by DHCP) then all you should have to do is

install the driver. If you are using a static IP address you might have

to reconfigure the network card after the update (although you should

not need to), so be sure to check the settings.

If the driver update does not fix the problems them other steps will be

required. If you have questions for me on this I will be happy to

answer them.
