Guest Gonzo Posted July 11, 2007 Posted July 11, 2007 I have backed up my WinXP Pro and system state, in the event of a disaster how would I rebuild my PC using this backup file if I had to do a clean install? I assume I would have to install a basic version of XP first?

What was used to make the backup? For example, if the backup was made using Acronis TrueImage and consists of a disc image of the entire system partition, then Windows would have been re-installed from this image file. At the other extreme, if only data and information files were backed up, then Windows and all of the applications would have to be re-installed first. Want to be a little bit more detailed?

It isn't especially a clean way to restore. You will need a working floppy in addition to the drive on which you saved the backup file. Jim
Guest Bert Kinney Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 Re: Restore from my windows backup? Hi Gonzo, I would not depend on Windows Backup for this. A much better method is to use imaging software such as Acronis True Image. http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage or Drive Image Backup Software for Windows http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/imagew.html Regards, Bert Kinney MS-MVP Shell/User http://bertk.mvps.org Member: http://dts-l.org Gonzo wrote: > Apologies, just the windows backup util. > > > "Ghostrider" <-00-@fitron.142> wrote in message > news:%23KNMES$wHHA.2488@TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl... >> Gonzo wrote: >> >>> I have backed up my WinXP Pro and system state, in the event of a >>> disaster how would I rebuild my PC using this backup file if I had to do >>> a clean install? >>> >>> I assume I would have to install a basic version of XP first? >> The answer really depends on what is in the backup.
