I was given a computer with a pirated XP Pro on it and found out only after

running the validation software. Needless to say, I want this pc above

board and want to install Windows 98 SE and then XP Home Upgade. I also want

to remove any traces of the old owner as you never know what they put on the

hard drive(ie..kiddie porn). I need detailed advice on how to proceed. I

would also like to keep some of the programs that were loaded on it if

possible. I hope someone can help and guide me through this as I have found

confusing information on how to proceed and in what order. Thanks in advance

to all who can help.

Re: Setting up PC

It has XP Pro that I need to replace with Windows 98 SE because it was not a

valid copy so I bought Windows 98 SE because I already have the XP Home

upgrade software. I need to replace the XP Pro first.

Re: Setting up PC

If you need advice about installing Win98 then you should post

your question in a Win98 newsgroup.

If you want to install a WinXP upgrade version then there is

no need at all to install Win98 first. Simply boot the machine

with your WinXP CD and proceed with a clean installation.

When prompted, insert the Win98 CD.

Re: Setting up PC

Why not do what I did... Low level format the drive with manufacturers disk

utility, and then perform a "clean install" of Windows XP Home ED. You can

use the Windows 98 SE CD to qualify for the installation of the Upgrade. It

worked sweet for me on a laptop. Best way, esp If you don't care about the

stuff former owner had on their PC.

Exactly. I agree completely.

If I bought a used computer, the first thing I would do with it would be to

reinstall the operating system cleanly. You have no idea how the computer

has been maintained, what has been installed incorrectly, what is missing,

what viruses and spyware there may be, etc. I wouldn't want to live with

somebody else's mistakes and problems, possibility of kiddie porn, etc., and

I wouldn't recommend that anyone else do either.

I

You can *not*. If you follow the advice above, you will also have to

reinstall the programs.

Do you have the installation media (CDs) for them? If not, you don't have

legal copies of those either.

That is where I am at. I put the windows 98 cd in and rebooted but it still

loads the windows XP Pro. If I hit the F8 key the options of going into safe

mode and other choices are there. Which should I choose to get it to load

the Windows 98 cd? Should I uninstall the XP Pro prior to doing this? I do

not think there is another OS on it so if I uninstall it will I then be able

to load the new Windows 98 cd? I apologize if I have offended some people

because I did not go to the 98 newsgroup but because of having the pirated XP

Pro on it now is why I started here. I am new at this and was just looking

for some guidance.

Create a bootable disc and put edit, format, and fdisk on it. Make

sure you have all the necessary drivers for your CD/DVD drive, disc

controller, mobo, video. Backup the machine. Set your BIOS to boot

from the CD and boot from your Windows 98SE CD. If that doesn't work,

boot from your floppy, verify that you can access the CD drive, fdisk,

format, then run the Win98 setup from the drive. Get all the critical

MS updates, install your favorite anti-virus.

This is completely unnecessary. The OP has already been told he doesn't

need to install Win98 first in order to install an upgrade copy of XP

Home. His problem is now that he hasn't set his boot order to boot from

the CD drive first.

To the OP: Start your computer and press a key to get into the BIOS.

What keypress you do depends on your computer. See this for getting into

your BIOS:

http://michaelstevenstech.com/bios_manufacturer.htm

http://www.uktsupport.co.uk/reference/biosp.htm

http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000235.htm

Once you are in the BIOS ("Setup"), look for the entry for Boot Order

and change the order to your CD/DVD drive first, hard drive second. Put

your XP Home Upgrade CD in the drive now. Exit the BIOS, saving changes.

The computer will reboot and you should see the light on your CD drive

go on. You will now see a message that says "Press any key to boot from

CD". Press any key. Then follow installations instructions here:

http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html - Clean Install How-To

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Reinstalling_Windows -

What you will need on-hand

Early in the XP install, you will be prompted to supply your Win98 disk.

Put the Win98 disk in the drive when prompted. The XP install will

continue and then will prompt you to put the XP install disk back in. Do

so. Put the Win98 disk away because you are done with it for now. Don't

lose it because you will need it if you ever need to reinstall the XP

upgrade.

After you finish the XP install, install drivers for all your hardware,

install desired programs, restore data from backups.

I attemted it and it did not ask for the 98 disk and went into install. It

It would be really helpful if you would take the time to read all the

links you've been given. All your questions would have been answered.

Start over at the point where you put in the XP install CD. Delete all

partitions. Create one new partition. Format it NTFS. Install Windows

into this new partition.

READ THE INSTRUCTIONS AT THE LINKS!

If you really can't figure this out, take the machine to a reputable

computer repair shop. This will not be your local version of

BigComputerStore/GeekSquad.

Which directions are you using?

I suggest these:

"Clean Install Windows XP," which can be found at:

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

[Excerpt:]

"9. If you are using the upgrade version of XP on a computer without any

version of Windows currently installed, this is where you will replace

the XP CD with your qualifying CD, XP setup will scan the qualifying CD

and instruct you to replace it with the XP CD to continue XP setup;

otherwise, you will not see this screen. Clean install qualifying media

can be any of the following Win NT3.51, 4.0, 2000, Win 95, 98, Me and XP

Home when upgrading to XP Pro."

I know you said you had a dodgy version of XP Pro installed on your PC,

but this is immaterial because you are performing a clean install. And

as long as you have qualifying media (e.g., a Windows 98 installation

disk), you can perform a clean install with your Windows XP Upgrade

disc.

*Do* you have an installation disk for 98? Or is it merely an OEM

recovery disk? If the latter, this could be problem. See:

[Excerpt:]

"You will need to have a qualifying Win98/Me/2000 CD to insert if you

are using an upgrade version of XP to clean install. OEM restore disks

will usually not fulfill the qualifying requirement. If the restore disk

has a i386 folder, it will usually work."

So what kind of 98 disc do you have?

Oh, and...

READ THE DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY!!!

Whoah! You do NOT need to do this. You do NOT need to install W98 first.

Don't do it this way! It's a wholly unnecessary waste if time.

Boot from the XP Home Upgrade CD, NOT the Win9X CD. The W9X CD is only

for showing proof of purchase.

Start the XP Home Upgrade install, and you will be asked for the W98 CD.

Put it in, and after a few moments you'll be asked for the XP Cd to proceed

with the XP install. You could potentially need an ME CD for this.

You can then put the W98 CD away. This one step is all you need to keep

that CD for. Moments, not hours, and no trash written to drive and

promptly overwritten.

You'll next be asked where to install to, and this is where you will remove

listed partitions, recreate them, and then format them. And that step is

going to take care of your next concern....

> I also want

> to remove any traces of the old owner as you never know what they put on

> the

> hard drive(ie..kiddie porn).

You arent'g going to need to worry about that, because your plan, as stated,

requires formatting the drive. Best to start with removing and recreating

the partitions, but the point is the same: You will have to clear the

drive to do what you want to do.

Or, better yet, leave the drive as it is. Instead, take it out and replace

it. It is trivial to do this, and cheap. A new 80 gig drive, will be

under CDN$50. In fact, this afternoon I purchased a new 250 gig SATA drive

for CDN$75.

Once done, you have *no* cause for concern over anything the previous owner

had on the system. And, this will give you some options in future as to

its contents, and remove concerns over the life left in that drive. Just

wrap up the drive, identify it, and set it aside for now.

Take the old drive out, put the new one in. Buy the same type (IDE - IDE,

or SATA - SATA), get the biggest cache you can, and set the jumpers the same

on the new one as the old.

If you're unsure, take the old drive with you to the store, and say "I need

a new one that connects like this". Get one with more space, higher RPM's

(to a max of 7200) and a larger cache. These will make the system seem

faster and last longer. While you're there, ask them to set the jumpers

the same (assuming it isn't SATA, where that doesn't apply).

Take the new drive home, plug it in, let the BIOS detect it, and start the

install.

> I need detailed advice on how to proceed. I

> would also like to keep some of the programs that were loaded on it if

> possible.

That's not going to be possible given what you want to do.

In the first place, if the OS is pirated, it's very likely that apps were

too, and those will require activation as well. And it appears you wished

to legitimize the system.

In the second first place, removing the old XP Pro and installing XP Home

requires formatting the drive. The apps will be *gone*.

In the third third place, those apps will need to be reinstalled due to the

hundreds of registry entries and files they create. You just can't copy

them. For most serious apps, that simply doesn't work.

> I hope someone can help and guide me through this as I have found

> confusing information on how to proceed and in what order.

See above.

> Thanks in advance

> to all who can help.

Do some Google searching on "Clean Install XP". The only difference is

the bit making the Upgrade CD work, and you have the disk for that.

I would suggest that you do consider replacing the hard drive. Then, if

you have any problems during the upgrade install, you can be *certain* that

it has nothing to do with what was on the drive before. And that certainty

may well be worth the price of the drive.

Frankly, you don't need the W98 key. You need the CD for about a minute,

and will never be asked for the key.

This assumes that the XP CD you have *is* an Upgrade version, which is only

available in retail packaging.

This is incorrect information. The drive can be brand-new, with no created

partitions, or the upgrade can run from an installed 98 system.

What you do have to have, for the upgrade qualification, is a proof of

purchase - and that can be a CD that doesnt even have to be yours. There

are no ownership or validation checks on this, aside from qualifying version

(i.e Win98 woin't work).

The first thing to do in such a case is delete all partitions and then

install the OS you want to totally fresh.

Simple steps:

1. Using the hard drive manufacturers software on boot media appropriate to

your PC, write zeroes to the hard drive.

2. Boot from the XP upgrade installation CD, when it seeks a qualifying

product for upgrade, remove the CD and put the 98SE install CD in the tray

and close. Install XP as usual including creating partition/formatting

(formatting has no visible cue and happens automatically when creating a

partition).

See step 5, you might want to image this first before proceeding.

3. Install motherboard drivers and any other the drivers the PC and

peripherals may require. DO NOT get any hardware drivers from MS update.

4. Install 3rd party application software.

5. When satisfied with installation and your tweaks, backup the PC to a

removable hard drive with imaging software. Keep removable hard drive

offline until you intend to restore this. Or, if you want to image your XP

again for changes made. Never overwrite the original XP installation image.

6. Activate XP. Get any online updates appropriate to XP Home, and your

3rd party applications.

Boot from the XP CD. It should present you with some options,

including formatting the disk and installing from scratch. Do that. At

some point in the process, since it's an upgrade disk, it will ask you

for proof of a qualifying product. Put the Win98 CD in the drive at

that point. When the install routine has satisfied itself, it will ask

you to put the XP CD back in the drive and continue on its merry way.

Your statement indicates that you haven't read through the procedure at

the link provided. Please read through it, as your situation is

explicitly covered in step 10b.

No, you're doing this wrong. First of all, you do *not* need to install

Windows 98 at all.

The requirement to use an upgrade version of Windows XP is to *own* a

previous qualifying version's installation CD , not to have it installed.

When setup doesn't find a previous qualifying version installed, it will

prompt you to insert its CD as proof of ownership. Just insert the previous

version's CD, and follow the prompts. Everything proceeds quite normally and

quite legitimately.

What you should be doing is booting from the Windows XP CD and doing a

clean installation from there. To boot from the CD, you have to go into the

BIOS setup program, and set the CD to be the first boot device.
