Keyboards do not work on new install of XP

I have a brand new Dell M90 laptop, it came with Vista loaded but Vista is

not allowed on our work network so I partitioned/formatted/installed XP Pro.

Everything works on this pc except any external keyboards I connect. I have

connected a mouse, hard drive, flash drive and all are recognized and drivers

loaded. When I connect any keyboard or USB num pad the found new hardware

wizard comes up. The wizard goes through the motions and at the end says The

hardware is not installed, can not find the software. The laptop keyboard

works fine.

I have downloaded and installed MS intellipoint 6.1 software and still get

no where.

The keyboard is a MS digital Media Pro, but I have also tried a generic

keyboard.

I have extracted the keyboard.inf file from the CD back to the windows/inf

directory.

thoughts?

Hi Richard,

Here are the troubleshooting step from Dell

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/wsM90/en/ug/trouble.htm#wp1053998

If these don't work I would suggest contacting Dell support.

Re: Keyboards do not work on new install of XP

Have you checked in Device manager where you'll also be able to check

and update the drivers? Also ensure the driver is for Xp and not

Vista.
