Where to get a cheap license for Windows XP?

I'd like a copy of Windows XP for a virtual machine.

With XP being a number of years old and computers with it therefore

reaching the end of their lives, and with some people migrating to

Vista, there must be a vast number of unused XP licenses floating around

out there. Where can I purchase a used copy cheaply?

Windows XP Pro (you didn't mention if you wanted Home or Pro)

http://www.buycheapsoftware.com/ms_products~subcategory~139.asp

$151

Windows XP Pro SP-1 (if you can handle downloading and installing SP-2

yourself)

http://www.viosoftware.com/Windows+XP+Professional/Windows+XP+Professional+SP1+OEM.html

$139

If you are intent on getting a used copy then OEM versions are ruled

out. You could hunt around at eBay and take the risk of getting burned.

1) Try a local used-software shop.

2) Try eBay or another on-line auction site. Be advised, however, that

getting a legitimate license of any kind from eBay is something of a

crap shoot. One should be very careful buying any software on eBay, as

eBay makes no prior effort to ensure that such sales are legitimate.

The problems stem from two completely different sources, but have the

same results: the buyer gets ripped off. A great many people don't fully

understand the terms of the license they own, and don't understand that

they cannot legitimately resell it, and - worse still - there are a

great many sellers who do know that they're selling bogus licenses. eBay

reacts only when someone files a complaint, and then all that really

happens, especially in the case of the many deliberate fraudsters, is

the seller of the pirated software returns using a different alias, to

continue selling illegitimate licenses.
