dvd-rom not spinning up

I recently upgraded my PC's drives, adding a DVD-RW while keeping the

original DVD-ROM as a secondary drive. Here's the problem: while the drive

shows up in My Computer, and is "functioning normally" in Device Manager, it

won't read anything. I insert a disc (DVD/CD, doesn't matter), it'll spin up

for a few seconds, then spin down, and that's it. As far as my PC is

concerned, there's no disc in there.

HELP!! 8-G

Have you used Windows Explorer to see if you can read the disk there?

Re: dvd-rom not spinning up

Yup. Doesn't even recognize a disc as being present, be it music, movie or

megabytes. :-)

Re: dvd-rom not spinning up

Ummm... Even new out of the box devices can be bad... Are you sure you

correctly jumpered the drives. Master/Slave, etc.? If both optical drives

are on the same cable, and are correctly jumpered, try switching them

around, or test with the new drive as the only drive on the cable (Master).

Re: dvd-rom not spinning up

I'll try that. I think I may have been a bit unclear, though. It's the

ORIGINAL drive that's snafued, not the new one.
