slow start up problem

Recommended Posts

Posted

My pc takes about 4 minutes before it will allow me to start any programs.

I have to wait for a message to popup in the task bar telling me that there

is no firewall. My windows firewall is enabled.

I tried to access the firewall settings at startup through the control panel.

I received a error message

"Due to an unidentified problem, Windows cannot display windows Firewall

settings".

Are there some settings I can switch to get rid of the delay?

When I purchased this Pc it had Norton internet security installed. I

uninstalled that and replaced it with NOd32. Everything was just to slow with

Norton. Could there be things left behind from Norton causing the problem?

What reports in Event Viewer?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in the

System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No

Information Reports please.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,

Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning

of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description

are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you

should double click for further information. You can copy using copy

and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further

information.

http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp

(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double

click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a

button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event

Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of

the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from

Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

RE: slow start up problem

I feel your pain! I don't know what your Norton alternative product is, but

it too could be a resource hog, just like Norton.

I have had NO - that's ZERO - instances of any documented intrusions into

machines which are running AVG Ant-Virus along with the ZoneAlarm firewall.

BOTH of these products are FREE downloads and I have no unrealistic start-up

slowness - neither program is a resource hog, like Norton. When I boot my

machine, I am presented with the logon screen in about a minute and a half

and can immediately run programs, once authenticated.

You may want to try starting the Task Manager as soon as you can and

verifying which app or service is slowing down your machine. If you can't

get this to start quickly enough BECAUSE of the resource-intensive

app/service, try starting it as a logon script, or placing the Task Manager

executable in the All Users Start-up folder. These methods will launch it

quicker that you can, and you can get a better idea of what is bogging down

your system (most likely your security product).

Once you identify the culprit, try uninstalling it, BUT do this without an

I'net connection. If your machine is noticeably faster, you can be sure you

ID'd the problem (note: try forcing a Restore Point before you uninstall, so

you can roll back the change without having to reinstall from disk). With

the change rolled back (i.e., security product active again), get your I'net

connection back, and go to http://free.grisoft.cz to download AVG Free

Anti-Virus (also available: Anti-Spyware and Anti-RootKit) and

http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp;jsessionid=GZM2B1rhcpS7PYxZme2E2sdrRhNzpLn1udcxUeWHiRjhVzKdkUYX!-933152460!-1062696904!7551!7552!NONE?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en

to get the free ZoneAlarm download. Note that both sites will try to steer

you to their full-version products for purchase, but the free ones are

extremely effective - you lose a bit of configurability and marginal

functionality, BUT WILL BE WELL PROTECTED without stalling your machine.

Kirk- Thanks for this info on copying info in event viewer. I've posted a

few problems here and elsewhere and always wished there was an easy way to

include the info from Event Viewer. Thanks, again.

Re: slow start up problem

You have rather gone over the top with the Error Reports. The ones dated

15 July would have been enough.

This is an interesting one:

Is your computer standalone or networked? Check the cable from the

network card to whereever it is supposed to go!

Your computer would also benefit from:

Download and install the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service

Download details: User Profile Hive Cleanup Service

UPHClean v1.5e readme.txt
