How do I confirm that my time server is running and that my work stations are pointed to it?

How do I confirm that my time server is running and that my work stations are pointed to it?

I have a Windows 2003 server that is my DC.

My XP SP2 workstations are not getting their time from that server. Their

times are not the same anyway.

All the workstations are port of my domain.

Is there a good check list I can go throught to make sure everything is

configured correclty?

The Windows Time service is running and is set to start automatically.

Event view doesn't have any Time Service event that I can see.

Where do I find the "Peerlist" ?

If I change the time on my DC, how long should I have to wait to see it

change back to the correct time?

How long should it take on the work station?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

One way to check is to confirm with external Time Zone server

Try using http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/

If your DC is time is ok , one way for clients to update as well is to add a

group policy under login to run a script to update time on the server.

net time //servername /set /y

Re: How do I confirm that my time server is running and that my work s

Thanks for the good information...

My server is off by at least 5 minutes...

I should have mentioned that I also have a firewall involved in the mix....

Is there a port of something I have to open for this to work?

Thanks!!!

I look to me like I don't have a PeerList...

Where do I put this file?

What are valid entries for this list?

I'm getting the following in the Event Viewer of my DC.

Event Type: Error

Event Source: W32Time

Event Category: None

Event ID: 48

Date: 07/18/2007

Time: 6:13:10 AM

User: N/A

Computer: SERVERNAME

Description:

Time Provider NtpClient: An error occurred during DNS lookup of the manually

configured peer 'PeerList'. NtpClient will continue to try the DNS lookup

every 960 minutes. This message will not be logged again until a successful

lookup of this manually configured peer occurs. The error was: No such

service is known. The service cannot be found in the specified name space.

Where do I go from here?

Thanks

Re: How do I confirm that my time server is running and that my work s

Re: How do I confirm that my time server is running and that my work s

The list of NTP servers (peerlist) is stored at

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Parameters

NtpServer.

If the "Type" value in this key is "NT5DS", the computer is configured to

get time from the domain hierarchy, not the server(s) identified in the

NtpServer value.

Use the commands:

w32tm /config /syncfromflags:manualpeerlist

w32tm /config /update

to switch to using the server specified in the NtpServer parameter.

The commands:

w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:time.nist.gov

w32tm /config /update

will set the "peer list" to get time from the time server operated by NIST.

The command:

w32tm /resync

will force a time synchronization.

You should get System Event Log entries from the Time Service after most of

these commands, but I've noticed that the /resync doesn't always create one.

Restarting the "Windows Time" service should definitly create at least one

System Even Log entry with source "W32Time telling you where the time

service is getting time via NTP.

The command

w32tm /?

gives reasonably good "Help" information for the w32tm command.

Make sure you time service is registered... As long as your

workstations are joined to the domain follow these steps..

net stop w32tm (test the service)

net start w32tm (if stopping it works)

otherwise..... start - run - regsvr32 w32time.dll

now go.. start - run - cmd - w32tm /resync

this will sync your workstation with your dc, you shouldnt have to use

any other switches.

Re: How do I confirm that my time server is running and that my work s

Re: How do I confirm that my time server is running and that my work s

This value is PeerList

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Parameters

NtpServer

My registry looks like this:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Parameters]

"ServiceMain"="SvchostEntry_W32Time"

"ServiceDll"=hex(2):43,00,3a,00,5c,00,57,00,49,00,4e,00,44,00,4f,00,57,00,53,\

00,5c,00,73,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,33,00,32,00,5c,00,77,00,33,00,\

32,00,74,00,69,00,6d,00,65,00,2e,00,64,00,6c,00,6c,00,00,00

"NtpServer"="PeerList"

"Type"="NTP"

Is this command for the Server that the workstations are getting the time

from or the workstations?

When I run "w32tm /resync" on the server I get a message.

"The computer did not sync because no time data was available"

This command "w32tm /resync /computer:DCservername" returns:

"The computer did not sync because no time data was available"

Seems I'm still dead in the water.......

Any more ideas on how to resolve this?

Thanks

This command "w32tm /resync" on the DC and workstation it returns the

following:

Sending resync command to local computer...

The computer did not resync because no time data was available.

Re: How do I confirm that my time server is running and that my work s

Re: How do I confirm that my time server is running and that my work s

The "NtpServer" registry value should have the DNS name of the time server

you want to use, not "PeerList".

In KB article 216734 in the section "Configuring Windows Time service to use

an external time source", step 5.b. says to type "Peers" and then goes on to

explain that this does not mean literally the word "Peers", but the actual

DNS name of the NTP server to use. You can specify more than one NTP

server's DNS name in case one becomes unavailable, but this is not generally

necessary because the NTP service provided by "well known" providers, such

as NIST (time.nist.gov) in the US or NRC (time.nrc.ca) in Canada, are very

reliable.

So, with NtpServer set to "PeerList", this won't work. You need to change

NtpServer to that it has the actual DNS name of a good NTP server.

Run the commands:

The commands:

w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:time.nist.gov

w32tm /config /update

This will set the registry value "NtpServer" to "time.nist.gov".

Then run the command

w32tm /resync

to get the time synchronized.

There may be some situations where you need to set the Time Service

parameters by Group Policy, but generally speaking, this is not necessary.

When computers are joined to the domain, they will automatically be set to

synchronize time from the domain.

It looks like you need a different valid source, you can go to this

site and find a good ntp server.

See http://tf.nist.gov/service/time-servers.html,

http://support.ntp.org/bin/view/Servers/StratumTwoTimeServers or

http://support.ntp.org/bin/view/Servers/WebHome.

I found out this morning that time.nist.gov appears to be suffering from

overload, resulting in failure to synchronize time, so I suggest avoiding

that one.

To specify more than one potential NTP server, the names in the list have to

be space seperated, so enclose the list in quotes:

w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:"time.nrc.ca time.windows.com"

Re: How do I confirm that my time server is running and that my work stations are pointed to it?

You don't need to set it in the registry, if you do then you could damage

the installation. You use the Group Policy (in the case of a domain) or

Local Security (in the case of a member server) console in Administrative

Tools. All those settings are in there.

Ok, where in GP are these settings? I've looked and can't see them...

Now that I've been trying to do this other then using the GP how do I get

the registry back to the default state it was in?

Thanks

Re: How do I confirm that my time server is running and that my work stations are pointed to it?

You shouldn't touch the registry without backing up the keys. However if you

set the group policy it might fix any wrong settings you may have made

there. You go to to the group policy management console in administrative

tools, or on 2003 servers without the GPMC addon you go to Active Directory

Users and Computers and right click on the domain name, or OU or whatever

you are applying the group policy on. Then you go to computer

management/Administrative Templates/System/Windows Time Service and adjust

the settings according to the Microsoft link I posted earlier.

Re: How do I confirm that my time server is running and that my work stations are pointed to it?

Re: How do I confirm that my time server is running and that my work stations are pointed to it?

Kelvin:

1. the w32tm command sets the appropriate registry entries correctly

1.a. the command

w32tm /config /syncfromflags:manual

will set the registry entry

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Parameters!Type

to "NTP"

1.b. the command

w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:time-a.nist.gov

will set the registry entry at

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Parameters!NtpServer

to "time-a.nist.gov" - note that the "0X01" is NOT required. If you have a

space between "time-a.nist.gov," and "0x1", the time service will try to get

time from a computer with the DNS name "0x1", which, of course, does not

exist.

1.c. the command

w32tm /config /reliable:YES

will, on Domain Controllers, configure this computer as a "reliable

time source", which is suggested for the Domain Controller that is at the

root of the domain hierarchy, which is where the rest of the domain will

synchronize from.

1.d the command

w32tm /config /update

will instruct the time service to re-read the registry entries

1.e the command

w32tm /resync /rediscover

will instruct the time service to retrieve time from the specified time

sources, after redetecting the network configuration and rediscovering the

time sources

The commmand w32tm /? will give you help information on all the available

options for the w32tm command.

2. if you have made settings in a GPO for the Time Service, all of the

settings you can make for the Time Service via GPO are "true policies",

which means that anything in

Computer Configuration

Administrative Templates

System

Windows Time Service

will be automatically undone on the target computers if you either:

2.a. change the settings to "Not Configured"

or

2.b unlink (delete) the GPO from the OU containing the targeted computers

or

2.c move the computer accounts to an OU that is not in the scope of the GPO

The settings made the "Windows Time Service" configuration in the GPO

actually go into the registry at

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\w32time. When you remove the

computer from the scope of the GPO, these settings are removed. The way

this work is that the values set in the Policies part of the registry, if

they exist, are used by the service instead of the ones at the "normal"

place in the registry. The settings at

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time are not changed

by the GPO, so when the GPO is removed (the computer falls out of scope and

the group policy settings are refreshed), the time service will revert to

using whatever is in the ...Services\W32Time key.

Note that the Windows Time Service settings are "boot" time settings; they

will only get removed if the target computer is restarted or the gpupdate

/force /boot command is used on the target computer.

Re: How do I confirm that my time server is running and that my work stations are pointed to it?

Hi Bruce

Thanks for the detailed reply!!!

My server seems to be running just fine.

Now I need to confirm that my work stations are working correctly...

If I run W32TM /resync should this set the time on my PC?

I can't see that I have any GPO with Windows Time setting configured.

I'm thinking with all my fiddling around that I've got my PC messed up...

Can you help me with the rest of this?

Thanks!!

Kelvin
