Guest Janie Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 I purchased McAfee Security Suite through Windstream for a monthly fee. I have not been able to download the program to my computer because it says : "Installation was cancelled because a required program failed to install." McAfee support says I need to download all the Window Updates in order for it to install. It will not let me download the security updates. I have a Dell computer and have worked with them and also McAfee and Windstream on this matter and it still does not let me download them. I would appreciate any help you could give me. Thanks, Janie Quote
Guest PA Bear Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 Re: Windows XP Security Updates By any chance did you recently have occasion to reinstall Windows? If you (1) uninstall McAfee Security Suite, (2) reboot, (3) make sure the Windows Firewall is enabled, (4) install either Avira AntiVir (http://www.free-av.com/) or Active Virus Shield (http://www.activevirusshield.com) (both free), (5) update the anti-virus definitions manually and then (6) run a full system scan in Safe Mode, do these problems persist? -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE, OE, Security, Shell/User) AumHa VSOP & Admin; DTS-L.org Janie wrote: > I purchased McAfee Security Suite through Windstream for a monthly > fee. > I have not been able to download the program to my computer because it > says > : "Installation was cancelled because a required program failed to > install." > McAfee support says I need to download all the Window Updates in order > for it to install. Guest Janie Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 Re: Windows XP Security Updates No, I have not reinstalled Windows. I have made sure the firewell is enabled but I have not installed any type of anti-virus program because one of the steps to installing McAfee is that there cannnot be any other Anti-Virus on the computer. I have taken everything off and now I have all kinds of advirsements coming through. My computer is getting very slow. I have run a full system scan but still have no luck in downloading the Window updates or McAfee Security Suites. Iwill try the free sites you gave me and will see if I have any luck. Thank you so much! Read my reply again. I'm suggesting /uninstalling/ McAfee and replacing it, etc., to see if it's the cause of your Windows Update problems. -- ~PA Bear Janie wrote: > No, I have not reinstalled Windows. Guest Janie Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 Re: Windows XP Security Updates I cannot uninstall McAfee because it is not on my computer to start with. It will not let me download it because it says: "Installation was cancelled because a required program failed to install". I so far have not had luck with the internet sites you gave me - but I haven't tried the 3rd step yet. Thanks again! Guest PA Bear Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 Re: Windows XP Security Updates My apologies, Janie: I misread your initial post. I interpreted "I have not been able to download the program to my computer" as "I have not been able to download [as in "any"] programs to my computer." Who does the computer belong to? Is there another anti-virus application already installed? What happens when you try to download/install updates from Windows Update website (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com)? Post any error messages you're getting in their entirety, please.
