Guest donaldsmarshall@gmail.com Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 All, I have installed vista Ultimate edition and when I run the windows update it was telling me that it failed to install I narrowed the faulty update down to the bitlocker and efs enhancments update but when I try and install it it fails with 80070643. Any ideas on how to fix this as it is annoying :) Thanks Quote

Guest Gistcheckin Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 Re: Windows Update Fails 80070643 on Vista extras Updates fail to install and you receive error message 0x80070643 Problem Description: When you try to install security\Critical Updates the installation fails and the Windows Update.log file contains error 80070643. Resolutions: Suggestion 1 ========== This can occur if the hotfix installer was referencing: C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2\edb.log and the file was corrupt. Either renaming C: \WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2\edb.log or renaming the entire C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2 folder will allow the hotfix install to complete normally. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Suggestion 2 ============ Register the following system files. 1. On the "Start" menu, click "Run." 2. Type "regsvr32 licdll.dll" (without quotes). 3. Click "OK." 4. Type "regsvr32 regwizc.dll"(without quotes). 5. Click "OK." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Suggestion 3 ============ This can occur if the "Microsoft Root Authority" certificate or the "NO LIABILITY ACCEPTED, ©97 VeriSign, Inc." certificate under Trusted Root Certification Authorities has been removed. On another computer that has the Microsoft Root Authority certificate installed, do the following: 1. Open Internet Explorer. 2. Click "Tools," then click "Internet options." 3. Click "Content," and then click "Certificates." 4. Click "Trusted Root Certification Authorities." 5. Scroll down until you locate Microsoft Root Authority certificate. 6. Click "Export." 7. Follow the prompts to export the certificate to "DER encoded Binary x.509(.CER)" file. On the computer that cannot install updates, follow the steps to import the certificate you saved. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Suggestion 4 ============ Try deleting the WUTEMP folder or removing the contents in that folder. There might have been a trace of a past download or corrupted content in the folder that is causing the download to fail. Temporarily disable any virus and Web accelerator/enhancement programs. http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/#Other -- Gistcheckin "Robert Aldwinckle" wrote: > <donaldsmarshall@gmail.com> wrote in message > news:1185481995.754127.219680@q75g2000hsh.googlegroups.com... > > All, > > > > I have installed vista Ultimate edition and when I run the windows > > update it was telling me that it failed to install I narrowed the > > faulty update down to the bitlocker and efs enhancments update but > > when I try and install it it fails with 80070643. > > > <cmd_output OS="XPsp2"> > F:\>set /a c = 0x643 > 1603 > F:\>net helpmsg %c% > > Fatal error during installation. > </cmd_output> > > > > > > Any ideas on how to fix this as it is annoying :) > > > Find out what "it" is? <eg> > > Hint: > > <title>How to read the Windowsupdate.log file</title> > http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093 > > and if something is failing during an install phase > look for its specific diagnostics; e.g. search all changed files > for that code or the decimal equivalent of it (or its lower half.) > > Etc. > > > > > > Thanks > > > > > Good luck > > Robert Aldwinckle > --- > > > Quote

Guest Gistcheckin Posted July 29, 2007 Posted July 29, 2007 Re: Windows Update Fails 80070643 on Vista extras Donald, What is the update for? MSOffice? Would you look further into the Update Log. Is there an Error 1603 showing as well? Run>Type in %windir%\windowsupdate.log Scroll to the bottom for the most recent updates. I had an 0x.....#error number as well but upon checking further, found the 1603 error listed prior to the installation failure. You receive an "error 1603: A fatal error occurred during installation" error message when you try to install a Windows Installer package http://support.microsoft.com/kb/834484 -- Gistcheckin "donaldsmarshall@gmail.com" wrote: > Thanks Gistcheckin I tried all of them, but some dont apply to vista. > > Quote
