Can't enable "compact view" (Windows 11)

(Windows 11 on laptop. ) Suddenly, I can't enable "Compact View" in File Explorer. I've done everything possible, incl. making sure "View" settings are set to"Compact View" and making sure the box is checked in "Folder Options," but nothing changes. Do I need to make a registry change? If so, please provide instructions.
