Blue Screen Windows 2003 Std. R2

Good Morning Everyone,

I hope everyone is doing well today. I have a Windows 2003 Std R2 Server

that is being used as a web server with IIS. Something strange is happening

to this server. When I move the mouse to de-activate the screen saver, I

get the usual Workstation Locked screen and press Ctrl+Alt+Del to unlock the

workstation.

Well when I give it the 3-finger salute, it takes a few minutes THEN the

prompt opens up for me to enter the password. I enter the password, the

logon screen disappears like it is logging on and all I see is a blue

screen. No error message, but I see the mouse cursor on the screen I can

move it around the screen but nothing opens up. The machine isn't locked

up, but users are still able to access the website with no problems. Plus

the NumLock & CapsLock keys turn on and off. I can't hit Ctrl+Alt+Del again

after logging on until waiting for the screen saver to come back on. Then it

will log me out, then I have to start all over again. All I get is a blue

screen, no error message.

I don't want to reset this server because I don't know what will happen. I

can still gain access to files through the network if I need to but I can't

log on. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Sincerely,

Anthony Smith

Hi Anthony,

See if you can access the servers Event Log through another machine's

Computer Management Console. (Logged on as Domain Admin right-click

MyComputer select Manage, right-click the Computer Management (Local) and

select Connect to Another Computer, then type in the address of your problem

server.) Let us know of any relevant Event IDs in there.

You can also download and install Microsofts (formerly Sysinternal's)

PsTools, which includes PsList which will let you view the running processes

on a remote system, the toolpack also includes PsKill which will allow you

to kill a process which you dont think should be running.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/pslist.mspx

If you do see a running process which when killed fixes your issue, it will

need to be removed which would probably involve restarting the server in

Safe Mode.

Also you should run a virus scan if you have an antivirus product which you

are able to remotely direct to scan this server.
