Safety Scanner finds infected files but then claims nothing was found!

Without a doubt my computer is infected with a virus, perhaps even a trojan. I am deeply concerned about what the ultimate outcome of continuing to use a infected pc will be? Will I lose access to my files? Will everything one day just be gone or equally upsetting, be visible but inaccessible? I have done so many things in an effort to rid my laptop of its illness and the latest attempt at "treatment' is Microsoft Safety Scanner. I have run the scanner 3 times, the deep scan twice (it took over 6 hours to complete and scanned over a million files! How is it that I have over a million
