Guest Millie Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 Hi I have Windows XP (media centre ed.) and I use four memory sticks plus an external drive. Is there a way that I can assign a name to each device instead of just a drive letter) so that I can recognize it when I plug it in? At the moment I have to open each one and look at the content to see which memory stick or drive it is. Thanks -- Millie
Guest Tinieblas Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 RE: How to assign drive names I do the same thing with all of my memory sticks. All you have to do is conect it to your computer, open "My Computer" so that you can see the drive, right click on it and hit rename, which will be down near the bottom of the pop up box, then just type in whatever name you want and hit enter. The drive letter will still be there because it will be a different letter depending on what computer it's on and where you attach it to your computer, but you can put a name on it that is something you will know it by, and that name will just show up before the letter like -- "my drive (E:)" "Millie" wrote: > Hi > > I have Windows XP (media centre ed.) and I use four memory sticks plus an > external drive. Guest JS Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 Re: How to assign drive names You could try creating an Autorun.inf file using Notepad on each drive, the contents of which would be as follows: [Autorun] Label=MyLabelName JS "Millie" <jackied@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:424463DA-5379-4721-AE59-82D85F151433@microsoft.com... > Hi > > I have Windows XP (media centre ed.) and I use four memory sticks plus an > external drive. Guest Millie Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 RE: How to assign drive names Hi Tinieblas I didn't realize it was so simple. Guest Nightowl Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 Re: How to assign drive names Hmm. . . forgive me if I'm wrong, Tinieblas, but (presuming Millie's using one memory stick at a time) won't every one then show as "My drive (E)"? Guest Bob I Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 Re: How to assign drive names No what is being changed is the "Label". So each drive has its own different label in place of the "generic" "Removable drive". So one would say "My Drive F(E:)", another would be "My Drive G(E:)" the next "My Drive H(E:)" as each one was inserted individually.
