Dalo Harkin Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 (edited) But you have to pay to get them and when you have some left over you actually lose money :D Just like in Minority Report I can see it being thumb or retinal scans next - still doesn't stop someone with a cigar cutter lopping your finger off, or poking your eye out  Edited August 19, 2008 by Dalo Harkin Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
Mara Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 My 'cash' card was compromised only a month ago - and our Credit Union called to warn us and say that the account had been closed. Didn't loose any money (as the Credit Union covered the loss), it's a huge pain in the bum re-opening accounts and getting a new card, etc. Until our retailers (here in British Columbia, Canada) are forced by law to attach their 'magic machines' via a heavy wire cord to under the counters (as some do), I'm beginning to think they should share in the loses. Not their direct fault but since they know this is happening frequently, surely they should too be held accountable for ensuring they take all measures possible? Quote
jo123 Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 here in england thieves stole bank records which showed card number pin number they got away with i think it was about 50,000 records the cops still do not know who stole them. Quote
Dalo Harkin Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 Nothing in this country amazes me anymore - if its not the police dragging their feet, its the government losing 'sensitive information' but its ok they have 'more pressing matters' to attend to! Mara Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 Privacy seems to be a thing of the past, sadly. As does security for our financial matters and more private things, such as health issues. And with holiday shopping starting already, it really does pay to be as careful as possible. My pet-peeve is the debit machines in all the stores where one uses cash from own bank account when paying for things - I love the convenience but so often it's virtually impossible to hide the key pad when typing in one's pin-number. One hand to hold the thing, one hand to type in the pin number - which leaves no extra hand to cover the thing while typing - surely there must be a better way. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 I agree Mara, the security offered from prying eyes on most pin and chip machines is sadly lacking, seems to be at its worst in some supermarkets too. BeeCeeBee Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 Well folks at least we can take some reasonable steps to protect our credit and debit cards even if it is only a decision not to use them at certain times. How about this - Over the past year there have been at least four news stories about stolen laptops from banks, insurance companies and even the Health Service Executive. (The Irish version of the NHS) All of them contained private information in data bases and each story was met by the usual BS about how good the encryption is on those files. They all fail to address the real issue. Who decided to allow our data to be stored in laptops that can be stolen while some somene is downing their Big Mac at the local Mcdonalds. Exactly who do they think they are that they can treat our privacy as if it was inventory in a parts department. Privacy is a thing of the past. Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Dalo Harkin Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 There is alot of issues recently with people spamming and phishing, use good protection software and be aware of what you put details on. Seth Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 Nothing in this country amazes me anymore - if its not the police dragging their feet... The police are irrelevant. They are the lowest denominator in the hierarchy. They do what they are constructed to do, no matter their personal objections. The same can be said for the parole board in such a judicial system. That is, the board will release another scum bag repeat offender into your neighborhood and mine (but not their own). Ever see a halfway house in the neighborhood of anyone involved in our judicial system? Don't even get me started on human ignorance, emotional decisions, and (media/political) propaganda. But since you asked lol, Obama is the latest and greatest example of such. Obama is the new Britney Spears of America. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Seth, The police in our country are useless and they are now starting to be replaced by plastic ones that carry a walkie talky and are no different from you or I. They have no more powers than you or I - they can do a citizens arrest which speaks for itself anyone can do. - There was once a time when breaking the law was taken seriously, you got locked up for a very long time, now you get a slap on the wrist and a fine - People serve less and less time in Jail and get out on good behaviour, funny you should mention a half way house as there was one not too far from my last house and a person had stabbed someone (not fatally) and rather than put him in prison he was sent to a halfway house (near me) and he was there for less than a week before he murdered someone! Our so called Government is a JOKE! Guest Wolfeymole Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 Very well I shall do so. In this sentence the word constructed should actually have been instructed. The police are irrelevant. They are the lowest denominator in the hierarchy. They do what they are constructed to do, no matter their personal objections. The entire statement could have been constructed very differently however. Here's my slant on this. With regard to personal personnel objections within the Police force, they are instructed to do as they are told. The entire Police establishment is constructed around this aspect. How's that Seth? Plastic Nev Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 (edited) :D at Wolfy. I bet I can do it cheaper. Back to watching your plastic, I hope I am not under the watchful gaze.:D ;) Funnily enough I got a new card through the post today for my normal debit account. Yet my old one doesn't run out till the end of December, but my new one starts as from the beginning of November, or twelve days ago. So the old one gets shredded as soon as I check the new one works. Don't leave an old card around, especially if as in my case, the old one is still in date. iwillbekingin2030 Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 awww :( awww :( , not that this isn't interesting. but when i saw the preview for this topic i though it meant plastic dishes and bottles (my mind is awkward like that) and i got all excited to read about thieves stealing plastic cups...only to find out you meant bank cards and credit cards. lol. I guess i'll make due without it...you have to admit, it would make one brilliant clump of words. :p ps. i didn't mean stealing as in raiding ur trash can (boring :D) , i was thinking more like thieves sneak into your house and steal all the plastic containers, Or your sitting drinking a coke at a cafe and you get up to leave and bump someone then when you get out onto the street u realize your coke bottle is missing. :D Quote I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me -Noel Coward :p
