Passive FTP

Hi,

Im trying to use an online 'game' - Entropia Universe. it relies on using

ftp, but I cannot logon to it, with the message passive ftp failed.

Using xp pro, my system meets their requirements. I use Zone Alarm Pro, to

which I have opened ports 20 and 21, but still no good. Closing ZA and having

Win firewall running, same. Having NO firewall running, I still cannot

connect to this game!

So it would seem xp is somehow blocking use of passive ftp.

Any ideas please?

TIA,

If you know the commands that the "game" is using, you can simulate it using

DOS FTP in the command window. For information on the commands visit this

link : http://cbfalconer.home.att.net/download/index.htm and download

dosftp.txt . If you cannot debug using this method contact the authors of

the "game" for configuration assistance.

Thanks bbunny, but yes, I have done that. Again, though, even with no

firewall running (risky I know), I am unable to connect to this particualr

ftp server with the error reading "passive ftp failed".

And Allan, thanks, but using a dos window to try and connect, mm, no

expert, but I don't think it would work. This online 'virtual' world, relies

on Windows and using ftp for all data tranfers.

Thanks guys, I may have to give up unless by some miracle I work it out!

If you are desperate try uninstalling ZA Pro completely, not just disabling

it. Do you have a packet sniffer program installed to monitor the connection

when you try running the "game"?

Allan, good suggestion to uninstalll ZA, but alas, I have and no difference.

And no, I have no packet sniffer programs running at all (as far as I know).

Thanks again anyways,

Did you try the suggestions in the FAQ? They mention two other ports

that you didn't, plus other suggestions.

Yah! And for anyone's interest:

Ok, I narrowed it all down to either XP Pro, my (broadband) modem or my

service provider. So today I finally had a chance to call the service

provider and got the answer!

I had to enable Network Address PortTranslation (NAPT) in the modem setup

page - haha, who ever would of thought of that???

So it now works!

Again, thanks to those who did try and help - was much appreciated.
