Can't log in to Windows XP

(apologies for cross post but this looked like a more active group)

Just got new company laptop that was set up to log on to a domain in the

office. (ctrl-alt-del > user name + password). In trying to connect to my

home network to transfer some files I changed the Domain to Workgroup under

System > Computer Name > Rename, and put in the name of my home Workgroup. I

didn't change anything else.

Rebooted. Now I get to the ctrl-alt-del bit but by user name and password

are not accepted.

Any suggestions how I might get back in?

Jeff

By joining the Workgroup you have effectively disjoined from the domain

and the trust to the domain has been lost, you can no longer logon to

the domain. You will have to ask the domain administrator to rejoin the

laptop back to the domain. The only way to log back on to the machine

now is with a local administrator account. Try hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del

twice at the logon screen and try to log on using the built in

Administrator account, any network/IT administrator worth his salt

should have set a password on the account but maybe the account has no

password. There are ways of using the resources on your home network

without having to join the workgroup, tell your IT person what you want

to accomplish and they should be able to help you set this up.

I see you've already gotten an answer to your question, but I wanted

to add a comment about crossposting.

You did *not* crosspost; what you did is multipost. I don't want to

give you a hard time, but for the future, please read my standard post

about multi-posting:

Please do not send the same message separately to more than one

newsgroup (called multiposting). Doing so just fragments the thread,

so someone who answers in one newsgroup doesn't get to see answers

from others in another newsgroup. And for those who read all the

newsgroups the message is multiposted to, they see the message

multiple times instead of once (they would see it only once if you

correctly crossposted instead). This wastes everyone's time, and gets

you poorer help than you should get.

If you must send the same message to more than one newsgroup, please

do so by crossposting (but only to a *few* related newsgroups).

Please see "What is the accepted way to share a message across

multiple newsgroups?" at http://smjg.port5.com/faqs/usenet/xpost.html
