Guest Richard Posted September 24, 2007 Posted September 24, 2007 I know that my PC can make my PC go into a standby condition. What I mean is that the indicator light go from green, to orange. But, what is hapenning is that after a short while my monitor turns off completely. I mean, the monitor state indicator light goes completely out, it does not just go to orange from green. Can WindowsXP be causing this? This morning I put the monitor on without turning on the PC. Naturally, the monitor indicator went from orange to green because of no signal. Then I put the PC on and the monitor state went to green. But, after a short time, the monitor was turned off. And I mean turned off, not just "in the orange state". TIA.

To correct some mistakes: I know that my PC can make my MONITOR go into a standby condition. What I mean is that the indicator light go from green, to orange. TIA Try a different monitor as a test to see if the monitor has a problem. It could be that the signal's too weak, or there's no signal. But you didn't say there was no signal to the monitor after you started XP.. If no signal, the monitor could be turning itself off to save energy. -- Joe =o)

What I mean is the monitor indicator was orange all night, not green. I switched on the PC this morning and after a very short time, the monitor light goes out completely, and of course a totally blank screen. The only other way to get the monitor indicator to go out completely is to press the on/off button on the monitor. Like I say, it's like the PC is causing the monitor to be switched off. And I don't mean off as in putting the monitor into an orange condition from green. In fact, to get the monitor working, which I can after several attempts, I have to use the on/off button on the monitor. Because when it goes off, it's like I touched the on/off button. I have to physically switch the monitor on after the PC made it go off, by pressing the monitor's on/off button.

The following Kelly registry tweak isn't a solution for your problem; it just suggests that, if after Standby the computer goes to the logon screen where XP shuts off the monitor. Try turning off this feature as a test. This might be done in the Power settings in Control Panel. http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm 160. Enable Monitor Power-off on Logon Screen Also try a different monitor. Try a different graphics card. -- Joe =o)

I understand putting the monitor in a standby condition, which might be considered turning the monitor off. When that happens, the monitor indicator is made to go orange, from green. But, that is not happening here. To get the monitor on, I have to press the on/off button. Usually several times before finally the monitor stays on showing green on the monitor indicator.

The only thing I can think of is this: The monitor is on, and with no video, it's in power down mode. That state can be maintained indefinitely. I put the PC on, and after a few moments, when video is available, the monitor seek to power up, but there is an intermittent fault in the monitor and on power up the power suppy or whatever fails. Thus the monitor indicator light goes out. But, if I mess about with the mains supply to the monitor, (toggling the switch on the mains socket, not the switch on the monitor), I can get it to be on. Thing is though, once it's on, it stays on for hours no problem. I'm using the monitor now.

Guest Unknown Posted September 25, 2007 Posted September 25, 2007 Re: Can WindowsXP turn off a monitor completely? Not quite. The monitor turns off as far as displaying goes but the power stays on. There is a switch on most all monitors for main power. It will power the monitor on but you'll only have a black screen if the computer is off.. I think first the monitor indicator then goes green, (as it would) then the monitor indicator goes out before Windows is loaded. Okay, now I press monitor on/off button. Nothing. So, I turn off mains supply, then on again and then press monitor on/off button. Monitor comes on now after having removed power to the monitor and restored it, but very shortly indicator goes blank again. I may repeat this cycle 2 or 3 times and eventually monitor stays on. For hours. I've no idea what's wrong really. Whether the problem is the monitor or something arising from the PC. I wondered if recent turning off mains power to the monitor by cutting mains to it, caused something. Before that, I just used to switch off the monitor using the monitor's on/off button, but leave mains supply to the monitor on all the time. I'll do more tests tomorrow. > "Richard" <rubbish@email.com> wrote in message > news:%23VLMpN7$HHA.4164@TK2MSFTNGP06.phx.gbl... >> >> "Unknown" <unknown@unknown.kom> wrote in message >> news:JYdKi.51889$Um6.24690@newssvr12.news.prodigy.net... >>>I re-read the entire thread.
