my defragmenter is broken

Recommended Posts

Posted

Analyze says I should defrag so I do and it gets to 13% compacting and then

says defrag complete. I check analyze and it still says i should defrag.

I've done this numerous times with no better results.

How can i fix disk defragmenter?

TIA

What percent free space do you have on your hard drive?

Try running disk cleanup first.

6 gb used

8gb free

and I have used disk cleanup first

Re: my defragmenter is broken

Is your hard disk formatted as FAT32 or NTFS. Select Start, Control

Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Disk Management to

find out.

If NTFS select, Start, Run, type "cmd" without quotes and hit Enter,

type "Chkdsk /f /r" without quotes and hit Enter. Answer Y to the

question which appears and exit.. You must restart the system before the

disk scan begins.

I have run scan disk on restart already. It's disk defragmenter that

doesn't work. See first post.

Re: my defragmenter is broken

Scandisk is a utility for checking drives formatted as FAT32 and was

provided by Microsoft for use with Windows 98 / Windows ME. It is not

provided for use with Windows XP. I am well aware that it's Disk

Defragmenter that doesn't work properly. One reason it sometimes doesn't

work properly is that there can be problems with the disk. Running

chkdsk will reveal whether there are problems.

Another problem could be that Disk Defragmenter is being interupted. You

might try running Disk Defragmenter in Safe Mode.

Re: my defragmenter is broken

Try using msconfig. Delete all items in startup. Reboot and run defrag. This

will have the effect of not loading any program which can interrupt defrag.

While defrag is running or before starting you may want to use task manager

to see what may be happening.

This is a diagnostic technique. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it.

Would you care to post your concerns?

Re: my defragmenter is broken

Hardly diagnostic when you say "Delete all items in startup." Far

simpler to run Disk Defragmenter in Safe Mode to achieve the same

objective and not be so destructive. In any event there are far better

ways to disable items in Start if you need to.

Good grief how is it in any way destructive by simply blocking the loading

of programs? Your diagnostic procedures obviously vary from mine but to say

mine are destructive leaves me with the impression you don't know much about

XP.

Your right of course it's not called scan disk but error checking which is

I wouldn't worry too much about it, what is fragged is the page file.

Re: my defragmenter is broken

Madx

I agree with Bob that your Report does not indicate any real problems.

You may be able to get the pagefile more contiguous i.e. reduce the

number of fragments.

Set the pagefile to Zero and restart the computer. Select Start, All

Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp, More Options, System

Restore and remove all but the latest System Restore point? Run Disk

Defragmenter and then set the pagefile to a minimum and a maximum of 1.5

gb and restart the computer. If it works the result will be a nice green

single unmovable contiguous block in the middle of the drive.

You can check the result by then do another Analyse with Disk

Defragmenter and comparing the result with this:

Pagefile fragmentation

Pagefile size = 1.50 GB

Total fragments = 52

I set the pagefile to 0 and cleaned up restore, restarted, ran defrag same

results only got to 13% compacting and then got the complete message. Also

I do not see any green block on the color graph?

Here is the new report. Is there anything else I can try? Thank you

Re: my defragmenter is broken

You have not completed what I suggessted.

Run Disk Defragmenter and then set the pagefile to a minimum and a

maximum of 1.5 gb and restart the computer. If it works the result will

be a nice green single unmovable contiguous block in the middle of the

drive.

It is the pagefile that comprises the green block. No pagefile = no

green block

Hope this helps.

I went back and to make sure amd the pagefile is1500mb max 1500 mb (the

units were in mb not gb so I guessed at 1500) min I guess i just copied the

wrong report. So here is the latest report. I go to analyze and it says I

Re: my defragmenter is broken

Try cCleaner (freeware) which does a more thorough job than Disk

CleanUp.

http://www.ccleaner.com/ccdownload.asp

http://www.ccleaner.com/

With any cleaner you need to proceed with caution. To be safe you

should create a restore point before using cCleaner. cCleaner also

offers backup before removal.

When using cCleaner think twice before checking Autocomplete Form

History under Internet Explorer. You do get a warning but this one has

irritating consequences. You may need to restore your system's

recollection of passwords after use so keep a record off computer so

that they can easily be re-entered.

Leave the Scan for Issues option alone.

Then Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp,

More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System

Restore points?

Then see if Disk Defragmenter misbehaves.

Are you using Hibernation?

I don't use hibernation.

I have been using ccleaner ran it again removed restore pts as requested,

defrag still not working. In the past I have scanned for issues and fixed

them did it fix something it shouldn't have?

I have also used winaso could that have broken defragmenter? But mostly

when I have run that I also ran defragmenter and it always worked before.

Well everything else is working fine on my computer so not sure why defrag

program isn't.
