No OS has any merits over any other OS.. Only an application + OS + platform have any merits at all. None are much use on their own.

Only an application + OS + > platform have any merits at all. None are much use on their own. Not entirely true. OS have merits on their own if one needs to throw away their hardware to run the new version of the OS and potentially can't afford to do so. At that point in time, alternatives that don't require this can become very tempting even if one has to make a sacrifice or two. -- Stephan 2003 Yamaha R6 君のこと思い出す日なんてないのは 君のこと忘れたときがないから

Halo 2 works on XP with a few hacks, (an external loader), but it can't be played online. I suppose console jockeys get excited about being able to play online, but since I had been playing online for years before it was ever available on a console it was all a bit of a yawn to me, and many others I suspect. AFAIK xbox360 doesn't support DX10, so it's not likely the game will need DX10 when it's eventually released on Vista, (of course they could recompile it to use DX10, but they never bothered with H2). FWIW you can't just rename DX9 files with DX10 names and get your DX10 software working. It doesn't work that way. You need hardware that supports DX10. There's not much new in multiplayer, and what there is is usually being done by PC games first, so not being able to play H2 online isn't much of a loss. I liked both Halo games for what they are, but it takes a special kind of idiot to want to line up at a store all night to get a few cents worth of free food for an overpriced piece of software. A bored idiot I would guess. Certainly though if Linux advocates want more users at the desktop level they will need to get OpenGL back up to speed and as an options in game titles. Having said that, it's probably easier for a Linux user to grab a cracked copy of XP/Vista, dual boot and play games on that, (not advocating it, just stating a reality).

AFAIK there is no Windows version yet. It does say somthing about Microsoft's sucesses though because they seem able to attract the public, generate excitement etc while Linux languishes and is totally ignored. There aren't many items that are given away for free that get almost completely ignored like Linux does and considering the alternatives (Windows/OSX) are very expensive, it doesn't say much about Linux when it can't generate the kind of enthusiasm a stupid game can.
