Guest Nigel Andrews Posted September 26, 2007 Posted September 26, 2007 I am recently finding my PC re-boots when I insert even any blank DVD in the DVDwriter!! I find then that the PC will keep re-booting until I eject the DVD. Then it seems only if I push the DVD draw (with DVD) back in at a certain point in the boot sequence will it continue to boot up to normal. Before or after that and it will reboot again.. and again! It doesn't happen every time I put a disc in, even if the conditions (apps running etc.) are the same. I don't seem to have autoplay set on this drive, so I don't know why it is even bothering when I load a DVD. Please can anybody help? Thanks Nigel

Why don't you read the reply to your problem a couple of days ago. Turn off the automatic restart in order to obtain an error message. Guest Nigel Andrews Posted September 26, 2007 Posted September 26, 2007 Re: Inserting a blank disk in RW drive reboots PC! d-d, Actually my last post was 9 days ago and there was no reply to that! Are you sure your answer applies to my problem? Your answer seems to apply to random restarts, when mine is specifically when I insert any disc in the RW drive. Thanks Nigel P.S. I did post this first 2 days ago, but that it not showing so I resent it. If this doesn't help, use the free microsoft news server http://news://msnews.microsoft.com rather than the "NTL Cablemodem News Service, Winchester/Hampshire". I was replying to your message two days ago, see also news:7a4cdb5d341f3f97d6f3c4a9d4ad56d9@d-d.mvps.org -or- http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general/browse_frm/thread/e0e250805ac7d90f/ef36e19e4edaec5e#ef36e19e4edaec5e -- d-d

The posted MSKB article refers to *unexpected* restarts and I would be surprised if anybody expects a restart when inserting any disc. <bg> -- d-d

Guest Nigel Andrews Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 Re: Inserting a blank disk in RW drive reboots PC! d-d, I have used the auto restart setting change and now get the 'blue screen' whenever the PC would have rebooted because of the DVD insertion. I have noted the error code and it is this:- 0x0000008E (0xC000005, 0x806FF94F, 0xB1E3A0F8, 0x00000000) I will try and find reference to that error on the MS website KnowledgeBase. Or if you can give me any pointers that would be great. I seem to be able to repeatedly 'beat' the rebooting by inserting the disc at a specific point in the boot sequence. If I push the draw in just as it has checked the drives and before it would boot from the CD (though I have changed the boot sequence). If the disk is inserted before or after that then the PC will reboot, but not immediately, some 10 or 15 seconds later! Maybe this could be fixed with a DVD writer firmware update, BIOS update. Some third party writer software that is running in the background may be causing this. BTW, the disk insertion is causing a BSOD, which is what reboots the PC, not the insertion if the disk. If you look in Event Viewer the full error message should be there. What is the rest of the error message? Does it refer to a *.dll file. Find out what chipset you have and check for new chipset drivers for your board. It could be hardware related. From a quick read of google results, you should try some memory testing software. http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp or memtest. You will need to make a boot disk and reboot from the DVD drive or floppy. If you could test another DVD writer in the machine that would be good, as writers are cheap to replace. HTH.
Guest Nigel Andrews Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 Re: Inserting a blank disk in RW drive reboots PC! Thanks for the advice. I think I would prefer to try and fix, rather than throw out a drive which just maybe needs firmware or some compatibility sorted out. It maybe cheap and time saving to replace, but the environment would expect me to be more responsible! I have the NEC firmware which is a few places on from the currently installed version, but it needs replugging the drive to install that, so it won't be done immediately. I can reliably get the disc in at the right point in the boot sequence to overcome the rebooting. But it still means it boots at least once for each disk I try to burn. Guest frodo@theshire.net Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 Re: Inserting a blank disk in RW drive reboots PC! First question: has that drive ever worked right? Can it read a CDROM disk, and a CD Audio disk? If it has NEVER worked right since install then it's most likely a bad drive, return it if you can. If it READS fine, but chokes on insertion of a blank RW disk then... Do you have "packet writting" software installed? That would have come w/ Roxio or Nero (rox: DirectCD; nero: InCD). Look in Task Manager, these drivers install at startup time; they often have a Tray Icon too. You probably need to remove them (prevent them from starting at boot time). You most likely don't even use them, and they often do cause this sort of incompatability. At least check the manufacturere's web site for the latest update. Another thing to check would be Device Manager for the drive in question and check all its properties. And as sugested earlier, you may want to update the chipset drivers for the motherboard. And the drive's firmware may be old/buggy, check the maker's site (the dev mngr prop page should tell you the firmware version). Good Luck.

Guest Nigel Andrews Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 Re: Inserting a blank disk in RW drive reboots PC! I did say at the start (now scrolled away) that the drive has worked fine for many months (over 18) and the occurrence of this rebooting seemed to be isolated from any other change or update. Tho' of course I do update XP to the MS schedule and maybe that caused this.
