Guest Ronald Stepp Posted September 26, 2007 Posted September 26, 2007 I am thinking of doing a windows xp repair reinstall, the computer has gotten pretty sluggish.. It has been so long since I have done anything like that, I can't remember what effect this will have on installed programs... will I have to reinstall all my programs after the reinstall and patch to the latest windows patches? Thanks for any information

Before you try the repair, you should make sure you do necessary routine maintenance: http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/slowcom.htm And after this, you may very well find there is no need for a repair install. Most common causes for sluggishness: 1. viruses, spyware, and other malware 2. too many programs/processes running for the amount of RAM you have

Note that a repair install affects system files only and does not remove any malware or third-party software that might cause your problem. > will I have to reinstall all my programs after the reinstall and patch > to the latest windows patches? A Repair Install will not require you to reinstall programs. You will need to reinstall the Windows Update patches. It would be wise to have your data backed up first. http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm - Repair Install How-To That said, it is very unlikely that a Repair Install will help with a sluggish machine. Instead, go through the following troubleshooting: Go through these general malware removal steps systematically - http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware Do maintenance: http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Maintenance Slow or Sluggish Computer: http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/slowcom.htm http://aumha.org/a/health.htm - Take Out the Trash Malke -- Elephant Boy Computers http://www.elephantboycomputers.com "Don't Panic!" It's highly unlikely that a repair installation will help. A repair installation replaces damaged copies of system files. If system files are damaged, they don't work more slowly, they don't work at all. If, for example, you are infected with malware (probably the leading cause of slow system these days) a repair installation will do nothing for you. > It has been so long since I have done anything like > that, I can't remember what effect this will have on installed programs... > will I have to reinstall all my programs after the reinstall and patch to > the latest windows patches?
