Martman46 Posted November 5, 2008 Posted November 5, 2008 I never thought they could, but really hoped they would and finally they did, Vote Obama to be President of the USA. Well done America you've help re-new my faith (ever so slightly) in democracy. But now the big job starts. You picked him and now you've got to back him. But let's not get gloomy to soon. I congratulate all the American people who stood in line for hours to create this historic vote WELL DONE TO YOU ALL. Quote
Dalo Harkin Posted November 5, 2008 Posted November 5, 2008 I agree - I have always been a 'bystander' of American politics and I feel that this is going to be a very big step for them and in turn the world. BeeCeeBee Posted November 5, 2008 Posted November 5, 2008 Yes we did! I just hope that the world understands the message. The President-Elect is a man who happens not to be white. What I hope everyone understands is that we elected him because he was the better choice. If the world expects a superman it will be disappointed and the message will be lost. Personally, I still beleive that the best choice would have been Hillary Clinton but in her absence there remained a very clear direction. I am secure in the knowledge that neither her gender nor his race played any role in my forming an opinion. Interestingly of the number of people who were honest enough to admit that race was an issue a substantial number (I think about 33%) voted for Obama anyway. That is the real message. Maybe we have grown up. This will not end racism but hopefully it is a step toward making it irrelevent. John McCain is a genuine hero whose actions have gone so far beyond the call of duty that he deserved to be rewarded. Unfortunatly (or maybe fortunately) that does not make him the best choice for President of the United States any more than does his being white. America has elected a new President based upon his potential. Had the races been reversed I would have voted the same way. It would appear to me that most of my "fellow mericans"felt the same. Don't get me wrong. It is a wonderful thing that we have elected a Black man to be President and yes that should send a signal to the world. It is not, however, the reason Barak Obama stands today as President-Elect. Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
DSTM Posted November 5, 2008 Posted November 5, 2008 All Men are created equal, and today,Martin Luther King's dream, has been realized. Another reason to celebrate, is Palin was kept out of the White House, and away from the Button. Oh Happy Days. Your Country, has a lot of healing to do, and I hope Obama, can do it for you. The World is watching.:) Quote Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.
BeeCeeBee Posted November 5, 2008 Posted November 5, 2008 Thanks for the kind wishes. Actually while there is a lot of healing to that is needed I think it is a different kind of healing then you mean. We need to heal the economy and our foreign policy, etc. The election has proven that we as a country know when something is broken and that it can be fixed. We as a nation have lost our tolerance for G.W. Bush. In fact every bit as much as did the rest of the world. What did we do? We waited knowing that on one day in November 2008 we can exercise the most effective form of protest available. The world has to understand that We have spoken. Now the world has the choice whether accept us back into a something like the role we have always exercised in partnership with others or to keep trying to Isolate the US. I have lived abroad for quite a few years and was disheartened by the feeling that there was more than just a displeasure with Bush. There is some real anti-American feeling going around. We have proven that we as a people are neither bafoons nor cowboys. Do remember that the Majority of us voted for Al Gore. Yes the system is a little convoluted and that gave us GWB but it was not an evil system and could just as well have gone the other way. As I said, we have spoken. We are not fools. We have our self interests for sure. Usually in the past the rational world understood that we usually mean well. We still do. My last thought is that I sincerley hope that our girl Sarah Palin becomes as irrelevent as race. Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
DSTM Posted November 5, 2008 Posted November 5, 2008 Interesting Post, beeceebeee. I meant rebuilding as well. Early morning here, and it's been a loooong day. If everybody is as positive, as you are, then I'm sure Obama, with everyone's help, can rebuild America into the great Nation,it once was. America has to once again earn the respect, from other Countries it once had. Most of the World doesn't hate the American people, just your Government, and the bad decisions, it has made. I also believe America would be in a different position, today, had the Black Vote not have been stifled by Bush.I believe had the 41 Mill African Americans been allowed to Vote, that lame Duck President Bush, wouldn't have secured a second term, and America wouldn't be in the position,it is today. It does affect us, who Governs, as we are staunch Allies, of the US. I believe the Candidate, with the best Crendentials won.I didn't like some of McCains proposals, especially Social Security, and Health Care. I thought when he chose Palin, as a running mate, immediately, he had lost the race, for the White House. My Thoughts.:) The dawning of a New Day. Quote Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.
BeeCeeBee Posted November 5, 2008 Posted November 5, 2008 I think we are on the same page DS. My last word (probably not) is that I hope that Joe Biden's prediction that he will be tested is wrong. GWB got us into an ill conceived war in Iraq by turning over the reigns of power to the Cheney's and Rumsfelds. Barak Obama had been right all along. I just hope people do not see him as soft. He made it clear that he would have used some of the resources squandered in Iraq to root out Bin Ladin and the rest. These are not the words of a soft man just a smart one. I am concerned that his anti war stance will give hope to our real enemies including the new ones we made since the Iraq war. I honestly believe that he can and would meet the kind of test we all fear I just hope that he doesn't have to. And yes, Australia has been a good friend. You have supproted us when we were wrong imagine how good it is going to feel to be right for a change. :D Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
Mara Posted November 5, 2008 Posted November 5, 2008 Yes, my neighbours turned out in masses to vote and that alone is simply wonderful! And their choice has me thrilled - not just for the people of the United States but for ourselves here in Canada - yipee!!! Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted November 5, 2008 Posted November 5, 2008 Yes, my neighbours turned out in masses to vote... - not just for the people of the United States but for ourselves here in Canada - yipee!!! Hmmmmmmmm!! Must have been a busy day for border crossings. Good to know we have the Canadian vote!!:D:D:D Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
DSTM Posted November 5, 2008 Posted November 5, 2008 Mara is talking about her neighbours, meaning the Americans, beeceebee.:) Not happy, you making fun of my friend. Quote Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.
BeeCeeBee Posted November 5, 2008 Posted November 5, 2008 Nah! I kinda like my interpretation. All those Canadians sneaking over the border to vote. Maybe bringing a moose or two to sic on Sarah. It really is far more interesting that way! Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
Mara Posted November 5, 2008 Posted November 5, 2008 Thanks so leaping to my defense, DSTM - gentle hug! Laughed when I read the "moose or two" as when a friendlie came from Virginia to visit, she was honestly horribly disappointed to not see a moose wandering down the roads. But yes, I do consider Americans 'my neighbours' - they live directly beside us for thousands of miles and they - and us - zip back and forth across the borders all the times. Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted November 5, 2008 Posted November 5, 2008 I will not be fooled by your denials. All you Canadians harbor moose. you can't fool us Americans. If you don't stop Sarah Palin is going to start hunting us. But then that is your plan. World domination!! Well we won't go down without a fight!!' I have learned my cross border politics from the greatest documentary of all time. allheart55 Posted November 6, 2008 Posted November 6, 2008 I have never been as excited over any Presidential candidate before President Elect Barack Obama. I have always worked in the campaign offices but this election I literally lived at the office. I met some pretty wonderful people and it was a real eye-opener being able to share in the victory of the election. It is definitely a night I will never forget. The sheer raw Emotions ranged from sobbing, screaming, cheering, clapping, and crying and everything in between. Strangers hugging each other, jumping up and down while chanting Yes WE Can I was both honored and humbled to be a small part of this election. We have a long hard road ahead of us, one I look forward to. America needs to unite and work together. Only when we can work as one, will the healing begin. Quote
RandyL Posted November 6, 2008 Posted November 6, 2008 Thank you everyone for taking the time to post on this. It's good to know that there are people all over the world who still care about world issues and the USA too. History was made and hopefully it will be a turning point for us all. I've waited a lifetime for the people to see the light. Hopefully this is a new beginning. Quote We are all members helping other members. BeeCeeBee Posted November 6, 2008 Posted November 6, 2008 History was made and hopefully it will be a turning point for us all. I've waited a lifetime for the people to see the light. Hopefully this is a new beginning. On May 28, 1968 (please don't google I amy be wrong;)) Bobby Kennedy (the last great hope until now.) said that there would or could be a black president within 40 years. He never made it past that summer so I guess that was as close as he was allowed to being right on. ( I first typed "dead perfect.") I became very cynical after that and just looked for the best of what was available. Even this year I chose Hillary. In the last few weeks I started to get caught up in it again just as I was 40 years ago. Forget race for a moment. You may not share my views of history and I certainly do not believe that the President-Elect is the second coming. But maybe the new Bobby. To me that would be worth waiting for. Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
allheart55 Posted November 6, 2008 Posted November 6, 2008 But maybe the new Bobby. To me that would be worth waiting for. I am so happy to hear those words....I have had a strong feeling for the last month that he just could be........ Whatever the case may be, I do know this, Barrack Obama is going to make us very proud. :) Quote

BeeCeeBee Posted November 7, 2008 Posted November 7, 2008 You are, of course, right. I had a look at the youtube video you posted and my reaction is really one of sadness. I hope the younger people among you understand just how great a sacrifice John McCain made for his Country. He did it in a war that I absolutly hated. But he is a hero in the true sense of the word. In the end his fatal flaw was that he just wanted to be president too badly. I think he bought into the theory that he really was qualified when he clearly was not. He has some real flaws and they came to the surface. In contrast, I beleive that Bill Clinton was a "great"president but not so much a great man. John McCain is a far greater man who would never have been even a good president. Its over now and I prefer to think of him for what he has done before. Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
Mara Posted November 7, 2008 Posted November 7, 2008 Yes, Mr. McCain must surely have faced a lot of struggles during this campaign (not the least of which was having someone running as a possible Vice President that undoubtedly caused many to run in the opposite direction when voting). While every government makes mistakes (heaven knows ours here in Canada often makes me cringe), it has never detracted from the esteem I've always had the the American public. For all the negative publicity - some truly earned - it doesn't detract from the thousands of acts of kindness the American people have given to others in great need throughout the world. I believe in my heart that the new President Elect will bring out the best in this great Country, in spite of the woes he inherits very soon - yipee!!! Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted November 7, 2008 Posted November 7, 2008 Yipeee! pretty well sums it up! Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
Seth Posted November 7, 2008 Posted November 7, 2008 I think the American people are in for a rude awakening. In general, leaders of countries are mere puppets controlled by special interest groups, large lobbyist corporations, and in the case of the US, the Federal Reserve. RandyL Posted November 7, 2008 Posted November 7, 2008 We are all well aware of the nature of the political system. However this election proves that in spite of that the American people will never give up on our country. Hopefully Obama will strive to better then the rest. That being said It is my belief that he is the best hope we have seen in a very long time. Quote We are all members helping other members.
