"svchost.exe - Application Error"

I am running xp sp2. This morning when I started the computer a pop up "Data

Execution Prevention - Microsoft Windows" came up saying "To help protect

your computer, Windows has closed this program" referencing "Generic Host

Process for Win32 Services". Then a second pop up "svchost.ext - Application

Error" came up saying "The instruction at 0x7e030af2 referenced memory at

0x7e030af2. The memory could not be written.". I clicked the "ok" button of

the second pop up to close it, after which the windows tool bar on the bottom

of the screen stops functioning. I closed Outlook which autostarted, but it

still shows on the windows tool bar. The start button on the tool bar would

not respond. I opened task manager and click restart, and that is when

everything froze. I had to do a hard shut down by holding down the power

on/of button. When I booted up the computer again, the "Data Execution

Prevention" pop up came up again, but not the "svchost.exe - Application

Error".

Anyone has any clue as to what happened, and anything I can do to fix?

Thank you.

Can you do anything at all when you log on normally? Can you log on to

Safe Mode? Is your machine free of virus and other pests? The DEP

settings can be modified:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875351

The settings can be changed in the /noexecute= switch in the boot.ini file:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875352

Did not try to log onto save mode. After the hard shut down and reboot, only

the DEP pop up showed up and not the svchost error. Then when I closed the

DEP pop up, I was able to continue on as normal.

During the initial boot when I got the svchost.exe application error pop up,

after I clicked the ok button to close that pop up, I was able to navigate to

other running applications only by alt-tab and not via the windows tool bar.

Even the start button on the windows tool bar would not respond.

Re: "svchost.exe - Application Error"

Make absolutely sure that you have no virus and pests on your computer

and if the error persists use the /noexecute=OptIn switch in the

boot.ini file.
