Dalo Harkin Posted November 6, 2008 Posted November 6, 2008 Existing solid-state drives are fast, but the next generation of such drives could perform up to 100 times faster thanks to a new flash file system developed by SanDisk. Dubbed ExtremeFFS, the new technology would improve random write speeds by using a page-based algorithm that avoids tying the logical location of data on the drive to its physical space. Instead, when data needs to be written, the drive will merely file it away based on where it would be most convenient and efficient location on the drive, all while taking into account the user’s own habits. The result is an improvement in random write performance as well as in overall endurance. SanDisk hasn't announced any products that will carry the technology yet, but expects to begin shipping them sometime next year.
