Guest wassup.doc Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 Re Message Sticks. I understand that is the name for the small storage "gismo" that fits into the E slot. The head (?) of the message stick is either retracted or, depending on the manufacturer is protected with a circular moving cover. Wassup.

Please, if you want to add further information to a post, *reply* to the original thread (and quote what's gone before), do not start a new one. Many hundreds of posts are made in these newsgroups every day, and it's extremely difficult to keep track of what a message is about without that quoted material. 2. You talk about the E slot, but I don't know what you mean by that. There is no standard E slot on computers. Do you mean a USB port? 3. There is no device I know of with the name "message stick." From your description, it sounds like you *may* be thinking of a USB flash drive. It's normally called a "thumb drive," or sometimes a "pen drive" or "jump drive." -- Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP Windows - Shell/User Please Reply to the Newsgroup
Guest wassup.doc Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 Re: PING: Ken Blake Thanks for all your help, Ken. That is the difference between an amateur and a professional (?). I admit to being a rank outsider. *All* your points, #1 using Reply, not New. #2 a USB port (although I still think E is correct as that is the choice that comes up when given where to store binaries). #3 USB Flash drive, too, is the correct name, not "message stick". Wherever did I get that name from (ha, ha, ha)? I hope your lesson sinks in. Yes, I did click yes, your reply was of help. David (Wassup). No, it's just the difference between having been around for a while and being new to the newsgroups, or to Windows XP. > I admit to > being a rank outsider. *All* your points, #1 using Reply, not New. OK. > #2 a USB > port (although I still think E is correct as that is the choice that comes up No, I wasn't questioning whether it was the correct drive letter on *your* machine. I was pointing out two things: 1. E: is *not* the identification for the USB port. It's a drive letter that, in your case, is given to the thumb drive you insert in that port (and probably any other USB port). 2. The fact that it's E:, as opposed to some other letter, depends on the drive configuration on *your* machine. When you call it the "E slot," it's far from clear what you are referring to, since thumb drives don't get the letter E: on all machines, and since the same thumb drive would normally get the same letter in other USB port you plugged it into. For example, on my machine, if I insert a thumb drive, it normally gets the letter I:. > when given where to store binaries). It's got nothing to do with storing binaries in particular, or with storing anything. When you plug in a thumb drive, it gets a drive letter, even if all you do with the thumb drive is read from it. > #3 USB Flash drive, too, is the correct > name, As I said, it goes by many names. In my circles, most of us call it a thumb drive, but the other names are common too. > not "message stick". Wherever did I get that name from (ha, ha, ha)?
