WinXP Pro SP2 with ALL updates/patches installed and NTFS file system.

Failed in system boot due to disk error. Booted from SP2 installation cd

and started the recovery console. Run chkdsk, found some errors and

fixed. re-run chkdsk 3 times reported no error. Boot again, reported win

could not start becouse system32\drivers\ntfs.sys missing or corrupt.

Started recovery console from cd and copied ntfs.sys from i386 in cd to

c:\windows\system32\drivers. Boot still failed for the same reason.

I removed the original HD and put a new HD in my PC install Win XP Pro

with SP2 my PC started perfectly in Windows. I connected up the original

HD as D:\, booted from c:\. The windows explorer could access d:\

without any problem. The file "ntfs.sys" (562kb 03/08/2004 1:15pm

version 5.1.2600.2180.[xpsp-sp2-rtm 040803-2158]) is found in

D:\windosw\system32, windows\system32\drivers and

d:\windows\system32\dllcache. It seems ok becouse i could delete, copy

and rename it. Running error checking in windows and chkdsk in DOS on

D:\ and found no error. Again copy ntfs.sys from xp cd and from

c:\windows\system32\drivers to d:\ and booting up on D:\ failed on

NTFS.sys missing or corrupt.(my bios has an option of HD's booting

sequence). Search Google and found MS kb930916. Download the update

patch and install in C:\ copy the new ntfs.sys (561kb 09/02/2007 version

5.1.2600.3081[xpsp-sp2gdr.070209-0025])to D:\ and still failed in bootup

for ntfs.sys missing or corrupt. It seems to me that there is no error

in the hd also the ntfs.sys in there and healthy. Any one has any clue

why my original HD failed in bootup? Is there any solution?

Please help, thank you!!

Thank you!!

Yes i tried this in the first instance after i got the error message.

IT DOSE NOT WORK FOR ME!!

As I mentioned in my post "Started recovery console from cd and copied

ntfs.sys from i386 in cd to c:\windows\system32\drivers. Boot still

failed for the same reason." Actual i followed exactly the instructions,

step by step, in KB822800, but Windows still reports ntfs.sys missing or

corrupt as starting.

One thing i forgot to mentioned is the I scanned my HD with 3 antivirus

softwares all reported clean, not infected.

Thank you, any other suggestions are truely welcome!!

Not yet.

I will consider this as my LAST option.

Further info:

I accessed the drive with Winternal's NTFSDOS Pro and all tests reports

no error.

I scanned the hd with manufacturer's (Seagate/maxtor) disk utility

reports no error.

Scanned ram (1024MB) with DocMemory dial tools reported no error.
